We The Jury

Young Lawyers Division 'We The Jury' Public Service Project Each year, the Division endeavors to serve both the public and the legal profession through special projects. That proud tradition continues in the 2004-05 bar year with the project We The Jury. With this project, the Division will educate high school students regarding one of the most valuable civic duties in which they can participate: jury service. We The Jury provides valuable public service with which the Division has long been associated, while at the same time educating those individuals who will one day stand to deliver justice in the context of their civic duty.

The right to trial by jury is a fundamental principle of the American legal system, guaranteed and secured first and foremost by the Sixth and Seventh Amendments to the United States Constitution, amendments to the individual states' constitutions, and the rules of civil and criminal procedure.

Jurors have an opportunity to provide a great service, but they also have a tremendous responsibility. Jurors must cull the facts from diverse testimony and apply the law to those facts. The more clearly young adults understand their roles as potential jurors before they are called to jury service, the more they will appreciate their duty and the better they will fulfill their responsibilities when that day arrives.

Thomas Jefferson envisioned a government moored to these principles through the collective conscience of a jury. Through this project, the Division seeks to strengthen that union by educating young adults about their civic responsibilities. We hope you will join us in this mission.
