Peace and no billables, we’re not asking for much!
Young Lawyers’ Holiday Wish List
The holiday season is here, so TYL editors asked young lawyers everywhere—practicing as solos, in firms, or in government; or teaching in law schools: What’s on your holiday wish list?
• more clients than I can
handle and a big hit on my contingency cases
• an innovative, fair, and effective way to measure a young lawyer’s “value” to clients (and to the firm) for legal services that is not necessarily calculated by how many six-minute increments it took to complete a task
• a day (or week) off
• a dues waiver for all of my bar association (local, minority, state, and national organizations) and professional memberships
• less work
• peace (a cure for the billable-hour disease) and joy (a new house for everyone who lost theirs to Hurricane Katrina)
•better public relations—let people beat up on doctors or insurance agents for a while
• a massive computer glitch wiping out our law school debt
• direction—as a young lawyer you hear from so many older lawyers about the path they took and what it takes to be successful. Should you be working hard to bill hours to make the partnership track or should you be using this time to make life-long connections that will help you stay mobile? A guidebook would be nice.
• strength and resilience for the people of New Orleans and a better city for those who return
• a raise
• peace on earth, good billings toward (wo)man
• to be visited by elves, who will clean and organize my office
• world peace—considering the current events, what better time to ask for that than now?
• to have my staff trained, the office organized and running efficiently, and to establish a referral base to maintain productivity; then we can provide scholarships to youth in our community for undergraduate and law school
• an end to poverty in the world
Happy Holidays!
