2006 Annual Meeting Minutes
2007 CLE Material

Sun, fun and business. That is what you can expect from Miami and the ABA YLD’s Midyear Meeting. Come join hundreds of other young lawyers from around the country as we debate and vote upon important issues facing young lawyers, our profession and our Division. Moreover, you can participate in free CLE, public service and bar leadership programs and socialize with other young lawyers in popular South Beach nightclubs. The Midyear Meeting in Miami truly offers something for everyone.

This year’s Midyear Meeting will feature three hours of free programming on Friday morning, which will allow you to better yourself in the morning and to relax and get a tan in the afternoon. Friday morning will also feature a special Bar Leadership Academy for officers of national, state, and local young lawyer organizations. Attendees can also, for a small price, participate in a joint luncheon between the ABA YLD and the American Bar Foundation and ABF Fellows featuring a discussion regarding "After the JD: What Every Young Lawyer and Senior Partner Should Know About The Changing Trends in Legal Careers."

On Friday night we will sample some Cuban cuisine at Bongo’s—a hip restaurant that converts into a nightclub. After the social event, attendees will have the opportunity to dance and socialize in a hot South Beach nightclub.

On Saturday morning, our Assembly will meet to debate resolutions and hear from ABA leaders. This year the Assembly will feature several young lawyer initiated resolutions that should offer a lively debate. You can also attend the very entertaining YLD Fellows debate on Saturday afternoon. That evening we will have a closing event at another hot South Beach nightclub.

I hope that you will join us in Miami. Be sure to register via the ABA’s Midyear Meeting website and then separately register for the ABA YLD portion of the meeting, including social events, using the registration link on this page.

Lawyers needed to Judge ABA Negotiation Competition in Miami

The American Bar Association Law Student Division needs approximately 12 more lawyers to serve as judges for the 2006-07 Negotiation Competition National Finals. The competition will be held in conjunction with the ABA Midyear Meeting February 10-11, 2007 at the Marriott Biscayne Bay in Miami.

Judges will have the opportunity to interact with the finest negotiators that the nation's law schools have to offer. Two hundred and twenty teams from law schools all over the United States and Canada entered the competition this year. The top 24 teams qualified to compete in the National Finals. The topic of this year's competition is Energy and Natural Resources.

Previous competition judging experience is not required. The ABA Law Student Division is looking for practicing attorneys, law professors, and judges who are interested in objectively evaluating the negotiation skills of these top law students and giving them useful feedback. Judges may earn CLE credit if their state CLE Board provides for credit via judging competitions. Please check with your state CLE Board.

The preliminary rounds will be held on Saturday, February 10th. Judges are asked to serve for only one of the rounds.

Round 1: Saturday, February 10th (8:30 am to 12:30 pm)
Round 2: Saturday, February 10th (2:00 pm to 6:00 pm)

If you are willing to serve as a judge, please enter your information on the form located at http://www.abanet.org/lsd/competitions/judges/nc-form.html.

Within a few days of receipt of your form, you will receive an email confirming your judging assignment. In January, you will also receive the competition problem (negotiation simulation), detailed judging instructions, standards for judging, and an evaluation criteria form and ranking sheet, as well as the competition rules. Reviewing these materials is the only preparation required of you.

If you have any colleagues who are willing to serve as judges, please pass this message along. The Law Student Division needs a total of 65 judges for the Negotiation Competition National Finals. Judging assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Peggy Pissarreck at 312-988-5621 or at pissarrm@staff.abanet.org.
