Young Lawyers Division Leadership

Council

The general executive and administrative authority over the Division resides in the Council, which acts as the functional counterpart of the ABA's Board of Governors.

During the time between YLD Assembly meetings, the Council generally may take any action that the Assembly could take, except to rescind a previous action of the Assembly.

The Council normally meets four times per year, and is composed of the Officers, the Constitutional Representatives, the Directors, the Coordinators, the District Representatives, and representatives of qualifying national affiliated organizations.

2006-2007 ABA YLD Chair Jay Ray prepares to hand the gavel to Chair-Elect Justin Goldstein, as former ABA YLD chairs are gathered in the background.

Assembly

The Assembly is the principle policymaking authority within the Division. As a general rule, it may review any action (other than election, appointment, or award) by the Council or any other board, committee, subcommittee, officer, representative, or other elected or appointed agent.

The Assembly is composed of members of the YLD Council, delegates representing affiliated state and local bar young lawyer organizations, two delegates representing each national affiliate, and delegates appointed by and representing the chief legal officer of each of the U.S. armed forces.

The Assembly debates many issues of importance to young lawyers, including policies placed on the ABA's House of Delegates calendar for debates. For more information about policy adopted by the YLD, please contact the Division at yld@staff.abanet.org.

Meetings: The Assembly takes place on Saturday morning of the ABA Midyear Meeting and Friday afternoon and Saturday morning of ABA Annual Meeting. For meeting dates and locations visit our meeting and events page.

Delegate Certification: The delegates certification process will begin two months before the meeting, so please revisit this site for more information at that time.
