Same-Sex
Marriage: California and Beyond (CLE)
Today only two states in the U.S. recognize marriage for
same sex couples. With a global economy, people might have
the opportunity to live, work, and raise families in more
than one state or country, and large employers may have gay
and lesbian employees all over the United States or in other
countries. Local laws in various states have drastically
different impacts on gay and lesbian families. The recognition
of same-sex marriage and the rights that flow from it, including
parental rights, spousal benefits, and numerous others vary
significantly from state to state, if offered at all. Geography
alone dictates many of the basic civil rights and responsibilities
of gays and lesbians and their families.
Join us for this informative discussion covering:
- Legal topics surrounding same-sex marriage and the issues
of which we should all be aware
- Practical difficulties and realities in today's world
as access to marriage continues to elude many gay and
lesbian couples
- Section 3 of the Federal
Defense of Marriage Act ("DOMA")
defines marriage as between a man and a woman
for purposes of the entire U.S. Code, effectively
precluding same-sex couples from qualifying for
the more than 1,100 federal rights, benefits
and responsibilities that come with marriage

Mario Sullivan, Attorney,
