YLD Liaisons Can Help Affiliate Outreach Programs

by Timothy M. Lupinacci

What are YLD liaisons and how can they help your affiliate? The YLD liaisons are the primary conduits of communication and information between the ABA Young Lawyers Division and numerous other ABA Divisions, Sections, Committees, and Forums. Over fifty young lawyers are appointed by the YLD Chair to serve two-year terms as liaisons to various ABA entities.

The liaisons are vital to ensuring the ongoing success of the ABA YLD. The liaisons keep the YLD membership informed of relevant news, information, and opportunities for young lawyer involvement with various other ABA Sections and committees. The liaisons also promote YLD events, continuing legal education programming, policy recommendations, and other YLD activities to the rest of the ABA.

The status of YLD liaisons is as varied as the numerous ABA sections, committees, and forums that have YLD liaisons. Some groups allow the liaison to vote on their governing councils and will fund the liaison's travel to council meetings. Others view the liaison as a mere observer and provide no vote or funding. While a large number of liaisons are appointed to work with substantive law sections of the bar, such as the Sections of Business Law Section, Torts and Insurance Practice Law (TIPs), or Labor and Employment Law, many liaisons work with commissions and forums that can greatly assist outreach programming for local affiliates. A contact list of liaisons working with ABA groups that may be of assistance to local affiliates is provided below. Feel free to contact these individuals to secure information or ideas about various outreach programs related to their areas of focus. Alternatively, you can contact the YLD Liaison Coordinator, Tim Lupinacci, at tlupinac@burr.com, for general information or referrals to YLD liaisons. Your YLD liaisons are ready to assist your affiliate in any way.
