Nevada's First 100

Rachelle DesVaux Bedke presents SafeNest Executive Director Estelle Murphy a congressional citation.

On October 21, the ABA YLD, the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, and the ABA Commission on Domestic Violence co-sponsored a celebration of the legacy of the first 100 women admitted to practice law in the State of Nevada at a special event held during the Fall AOP National Conference in Las Vegas. The spectacular dinner, hosted by Wolfgang Puck and Barbara Lazaroff and their partner Tom Kaplan at the Chinois Restaurant was attended by over 200 guests, including fifty-three honorees. The guest list included representatives of the national ABA sponsors, members of Nevada's federal and state benches, and leaders of other Nevada bar organizations.

Not only did this gala event recognize the pioneering spirit of the honorees, but it also raised $20,000 to benefit SafeNest, a domestic violence program in Las Vegas offering shelter services, a twenty-four hour crisis line, support groups, and legal services to victims of domestic violence and their families.

This event was a huge success and might be just what your affiliate is looking for. A how-to workshop was held at the Las Vegas AOP, and materials from that workshop are available. Please contact Tim Gugerty at the ABA YLD, 312/988-5626.
