The YLD Fall Conference, previously known as the Fall AOP, will be held at the Radisson in Scottsdale, Arizona, on October 19-21, 2000. Look for a change in the format of this and other conferences this year. These conferences were previously referred to as the AOPs (Affiliate Outreach Projects). The change in nomenclature is due to the fact that, this year, all four national meetings will consist of a variety of programming-bar leadership training, CLE programming, and public service project programs-that goes beyond the traditional affiliate-related programming that has typically comprised the AOP meetings.
On Thursday, the festivities will kick off with a two hour margarita reception hosted by the Radisson. A social event will be held on Friday, October 20, 2000, at the Phoenix Zoo.
The public service project programs that will be featured at the Fall Conference, while not yet finalized, will focus on the YLD's special projects for 2000-01: Law and the Student Citizen and Domestic Violence. There will also be bar leadership presentations on the following topics:
- How to run an effective meeting (including an introduction to parliamentary procedure) by YLD Chair Brian Melendez. The importance of this topic was highlighted by James H. Slaughter in "Schools of Procedural Rules" in a recent ABA Journal;
- Media relations and publicity;
- How to recruit, retain, and target under-represented groups of lawyers, e.g., public sector, in-house, solo and small firm practitioners, and minorities (panel discussion); and
- How to compile a history of your organization so that you know what has and has not worked in the past, so you don't have to re-invent the wheel each time your leadership changes.
Member service projects and CLE-certified professional development presentations will also be available.
