Get Involved with the Intellectual Property Law Committee

By Chris Glembocki

The Intellectual Property Law (IPL) committee of the Young Lawyers Division provides an opportunity for new intellectual property attorneys to grow as associates and assistant in-house counsels.

IP law is quickly becoming a topic in both legal and nonlegal circles as significant awards associated with suits involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets are covered by the media. From patents awarded to Amazon.com, to the trademarked Nike swoosh, to the extension of copyright terms covering famous works including Disney characters and George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the IPL Committee strives to educate its members through its introductory programs and periodic newsletters.

This year's Committee chair, Michael Clorite of McCormick Paulding & Huber LLP, has organized a number of programs including the following: Monitoring the Internet for Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights. This presentation, scheduled for the 2001 ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago, will include a panel of distinguished guests discussing the intricacies of policing IP rights over the Internet. Coordinator: Roberta Kraus, 212-682-9640, e-mail kraus@robinblecker.com.

What E-Commerce Clients Expect from Their Attorneys. This panel presentation will highlight what every attorney needs to know when dealing with high-tech clients. The panel is currently slated for two presentations: in Mystic, Connecticut, March 17, 2001, at the Northeast Regional Conference and at the 2001 ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago. Coordinator: Michael Clorite, 860-549-5290, e-mail Clorite@IP-Lawyers.com.

What Is Intellectual Property, and Why Should You Care? This introduction to patent, trademark, and copyright law, presented in a fun, innovative format, is planned for the Spring 2001 National Conference in Anchorage, Alaska. The panel coordinator position is currently open. Interested in taking this one on? Contact Michael Clorite at 860-549-5290 or e-mail Clorite@IP- Lawyers.com

To keep current with what's going on, check the IPL Committee's website at www.abanet.org/yld/intelprop/home.html for upcoming events and articles of interest. The Committee's newsletter is mailed to committee members and distributed at national meetings. Newsletter Coordinator: Peter Vodola, 860-293-3500, e-mail Pvodola@llgm.com. Website Coordinator: Joseph Hahn 213-892-5538, e-mail Jhahn@mofo.com.

Other opportunities to get involved include projects for recruitment of new members. Coordinator: Ashok Mannava, 202-508-9157, e-mail Mannava@bannerwitcoff.com.

If you are new to the IP field, consider joining the IPL Committee. Involvement in the ABA Young Lawyers Division provides a variety of benefits and opportunities, including networking with lawyers from across the country, planning and organizing programs for ABA and/or YLD meetings, and the opportunity to write for ABA publications.
