ABA Standing Committee
Seeks Entries for 2001 Levit Essay Contest
The American Bar Association
Standing Committee on Lawyers' Professional Liability is seeking law
student and young lawyer entries for its 2001 Bert W. Levit Essay Contest.
The contest, which is open
to members of the ABA Young Lawyers Division or Law Student Division,
is co-sponsored by the San Francisco law firm of Long & Levit LLP. The
winner will be awarded $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to the National
Legal Malpractice Conference in Washington, D.C., on April 18-20, 2001.
For this year's essay contest,
entrants must assume the role of a judge in a state trial court, presiding
over a legal malpractice case. In this fictional scenario, trial has
concluded, but the defendant is attempting to have the jury verdict
set aside by filing a motion JNOV, or "judgment notwithstanding the
verdict." The complete facts of the case are available online at www.abanet.org/legalservices/levit.html#info/.
The postmark deadline for
submitting essays is Jan. 15, 2001. All essays must be prepared exclusively
for the contest, and should not exceed 3,000 words. For further information,
visit http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/levit.html#info/, or
contact Edna Driver at 312/ 988-5763 or via e-mail at drivere@staff.abanet.org.
