101 Practice Series

The practice series is an online resource for new lawyers covering basic training in both substantive and practical aspects of law practice. With over 170 quick tips and tools, this series is an essential resource for lawyers in their first three years of practice and is exclusively available to ABA members.

A book containing many 101 Practice series articles is now available in the ABA web store.

Submit an Article for Consideration
Review the guidelines below and send article submissions to the YLD Committee and Program Manager, Tracy Kaempf, at kaempft@staff.abanet.org. The Young Lawyers Division cannot guarantee that articles will be published. Please for allow 2-3 weeks for notice regarding acceptance of your article. The Young Lawyer Division reserves all rights of first publication; authors must sign a copyright release form upon acceptance of their articles. It is the policy of Young Lawyers Division to not pay for articles written.

Guidelines
The 101 Practices Series is made available by American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. It is specifically geared toward the new lawyer however, the resource is available to all Association members free of charge. The articles are designed to provide newer practitioners with basic training in both substantive and practical aspects of a law practice. It is not a law review, scholarly journal, or magazine.  The resource is designed to deliver specific, practical information in an easy-to-read format that maintains a professional presentation.  The writing must be clear and concise, using common words and generally short sentences in short paragraphs to communicate practical information. When feasible, authors should write in the active voice and include tips, lists, bullet points, examples, good quotes, lively writing, and other techniques to facilitate the readers’ grasp of information. In general, the practice series follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, and Webster's 11th edition. Most articles are fewer than 300 words; the longest features are approximately 600 words.

Author Agreement Form Required
If you would like to write for the 101 Practice Series, an Author Agreement is required. Please download it and submit it according to the instructions on the form.

Reprint Permission Request Form
If you would like to reprint or repost any of the 101 Practice Series articles on your web site, you must request reprint permission from the ABA. Please fill out the reprint permission form and submit it according to the attached instructions.
