TECHNIQUES COMMITTEE
The Scope of the Committee
Our Committees scope covers:
Matters relating to the preparation and trial of legal actions involving issues of tort or
insurance law, including, but not limited to, the study, criticism and evaluation of
techniques, tactics, stratagems and methods currently used, or recommended or suggested
for use, in connection with any of the following:
l. Pleadings; joinder of parties or causes of action; third party procedure;
2. Pre-trial procedure; depositions and other discovery procedures; motions for summary
judgment;
3. Selection of the jury; opening statements; examination and cross-examination; motions
before and during trial; closing arguments; instructions to the jury; motions after
judgment;
4. Admissibility of evidence; introduction in evidence and use of exhibits; experiments
and demonstrations; proof of damages; use of life-expectancy and work-life-expectancy
tables;
5. Competency and qualification of witnesses; uses and abuses of expert testimony;
6. Courtroom ethics, conduct and manners; misconduct of jurors, counsel or the court;
7. Making a record in the trial court for use on appeal; and
8. Use of declaratory judgment procedure.
The Committee is structured around thirteen sub-committees which do the real work of the
Committee. The sub-committees are: Annual Meeting Program, CLE Mid-Year Meeting Program,
Committee Regional Program, Long Range Planning, Legislative, Membership, Membership
Involvement, National CLE Program, Newsletter, Public Relations, Publications, Technology,
and Women & Minority Involvement.

For enrollment in a committee of the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section, simply fill out the on-line committee
application form.
Please note: If you are already a Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section member, you may join up to three (3) committees at no
additional cost. However, if you are not a Section member, you must join the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section first.
