Get Connected:  Subscribe to Medicine and Law List Serve

The TIPS Medicine and Law Committee List Serve, tips-medicine@abanet.org, is a private e-mail discussion group exclusively for Committee members.

A List Serve is an e-mail discussion group, often referred to on the Internet as a "list." The software managing the distribution and maintenance of these lists is known as a "list server." The List Serve provides a mechanism by which subscribers with common interests can communicate with each other by sending mass mailings amongst themselves. A subscriber is able to send a message to all other subscribers with the single posting of an e-mail message to the list.

The TIPS Medicine and Law Committee List Serve, tips-medicine@abanet.org, is a private e-mail discussion group exclusively for Medicine and Law Committee members.

To request subscription privileges to the Medicine and Law Committee List Serve send an e-mail message to the Medicine and Law Committee list manager requesting subscription. Reach our list manager, Erik G. Kapocius, at kapociue@staff.abanet.org. The request must include your full name, address, and affiliation so that we can verify that you are a Medicine and Law Committee member. If possible, please include your ABA member number.

A welcome message from the list manager arrives confirming your addition to the TIPS Medicine and Law Committee List Serve. Please save this message for future reference, especially if you are a first-time subscriber to an electronic mailing list. Remember to record the actual name of the Medicine and Law Committee List Serve, tips-medicine@abanet.org, and add it to your personal address book. You cannot send messages without referencing that particular name. It is also a good idea to review the content of the original welcome message because it provides information about the list and instructions on how to unsubscribe and send messages. The welcome message instructs on how to:

  • confirm receipt of messages sent to the list;

  • send you a copy of your own message so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way;

  • access subscription options;

  • retrieve archived messages; and

  • locate ABA information on List Serve participation policies.

Once subscribed to the Medicine and Law Committee List Serve, send a message to the entire group by sending a message to the name of the list, tips-medicine@abanet.org. This is called "sending mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and the List Serve makes copies and distributes the message to all Medicine and Law Committee List Serve subscribers. This address, tips-medicine@abanet.org, is also known as the "list address." Please do not copy an individual List Serve member on the e-mail; if you do, that person will receive the message twice.

Messages intended for the entire list should be sent to the list name, tips-medicine@abanet.org, using the appropriate function of your e-mail program. Messages directed to a specific person should be sent to that person through direct e-mail. Please do not post personal messages to the entire list.

Be advised that the reply function does not address a message to the sender, but rather to the entire list. Replying to the entire list may be undesirable. For this reason, the body of the e-mail message should provide a name and e-mail address together with a request for a direct e-mail reply instead of a reply performed by clicking on the reply function.

If you change your e-mail address after you subscribe, please notify the list manager, so that the change can be incorporated. Problems or questions about the Medicine and Law Committee List Serve may be directed to Erik G. Kapocius at kapociue@staff.abanet.org. Help for list managers can be found on the ABA’s website at http://www.abanet.org/discussions/listmgr.html.
