Fellow TIPSters:
Welcome to Chicago. My Town. My Kind of Town. Site of the 2009 Annual Meeting.
We will kick off the festivities with a cocktail party at the top of the city – the 99th floor of the Willis Tower, where on a clear day you can see four different states – Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. On Sunday, thanks to our beloved Denise St. Fort, we are the envy of the ABA, having booked (over a year in advance) the Shedd Aquarium for our Leadership Dinner. We will enjoy drinks on the veranda by Lake Michigan and in the Oceanarium among the Beluga whales and Pacific White-sided dolphins. Dinner will be served in the Aquarium, where those enjoying hors d’oeuvres of the sea food variety may get some dirty looks from the residents swimming by us.
Chicago may not be “ready for reform” but it is ready for you. Explore beyond the ABA-related venues to enjoy all that Chicago has to offer. If you make reservations early enough, you may get a seat at Spiaggia on the high end or Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop on the budget end of the Obama’s list of favorite eateries. Little Italy, Chinatown and Greektown provide old country authenticity while the steak joints range from the institutions like Gene and Georgetti’s to the well-known chains (Morton’s, Capital Grille, and Ruth’s Chris). After dinner (and even after normal lights out) Rush Street beckons, including the infamous Viagra Triangle. Be careful not to stay up too late, as bars are open until 4 a.m.
Those wishing to make a shorter night of it can view a show in our burgeoning Theater District (Cadillac Palace, Bank of America Theater and Oriental Theater host Broadway Musicals; the Goodman and Steppenwolf Theater offer a variety of theatrical performances). For musicals, see www.chicago-theater.com. For a wider variety of performances, see www.theatermania.com/chicago. For baseball fans, the Chicago White Sox host the dreaded New York Yankees for four games from July 30 through August 2. Get your tickets in advance. For those of you who are desperate, and should be after over 100 years of futility, get to town early to see the Cubs host the Houston Astros from July 26-29, where you can enjoy Wrigley Field, the largest outdoor beer garden in the world at which something resembling baseball may be witnessed. Our near North neighborhood of Old Town offers the best ribs (Twin Anchors) with Sinatra music complimentary and the best comedy (Second City, Zanies).
Make sure you get back to your room early enough to enjoy the days of summer in Chicago, too. There is something for everyone. Chicago is famous for its varied
architecture, which can be toured by foot, trolley or boat. The Art Museum is among the finest, and the Museum complex (Field History, Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium), a long stroll from the hotel, provides an entire day’s worth of sightseeing, from our ancient past (Sue the Tyrannosaurus Rex) to our potential future (and neighboring galaxies). The Museum of Science and Industry, the last standing building from the 1893 Columbian Exposition, is a short drive away. Authentic lunch spots downtown include Cajun (Heaven on Seven), German (Berghoff Café), burgers (Billy Goat tavern), pizza (Giordano’s; Gino’s; Lou Malnati’s) and Steam Table (Manny’s).
Make your plans. And remember, it’s Chicago. That means do what I meant, not what I said.
