LIFE INSURANCE LAW COMMITTEE
Message from the Chair

Covert J. Geary - Committee Chair
Covert J. Geary, Chair

Thank you for visiting the Life Insurance Law Committee web site! It is another busy year for the Committee. We continue to work hard to bring you information on developments relevant to the life insurance law industry.

The planning for our 34th Annual Mid-Winter CLE Meeting, which will be held at the Ft. Lauderdale Grande Hotel & Yacht Club in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, January, 17-20, 2008, is well under way. Please follow this link to the brochure and sign up here for the conference online registration!

The Life Insurance Law Committee again serves as the host committee of the program, which presents topics of interest to anyone practicing in the areas of life, health and disability insurance law, ERISA, and employment and benefits. For the second year, our program will include a number of "plenary sessions" for all attendees, plus a series of "breakout sessions." Three programs will be presented during each of the "breakout session" time slots, giving attendees the opportunity to choose a program within their particular area of interest.

The plenary sessions include presentations on topics ranging from stranger owned life insurance (STOLI), a roundtable of insurance commissioners, stop loss coverage in health insurance, and ethics and issues in attorney-client privilege. The breakout sessions offer a wide variety of topics, including emerging trends in employment practice liability coverage and fiduciary insurance coverage, life insurance products and distribution channels, an update of employment and labor law decisions by the Supreme Court; a very timely program on e-discovery, basics of life reinsurance, setting up a workers compensation carrier or captive, and an ERISA practice and procedure update. While our meeting always presents topics of interest to experienced practitioners, this year's program also includes sessions that should appeal to beginners as well. We encourage you to invite a younger colleague to join us for the conference.

Please click onto the Events link for more information about all of the Committee's CLE programs.
In addition to producing dynamic CLE programs and keeping you informed of the latest happenings and trends in life insurance law through articles in our newsletter (many thanks to our Editor, Matt Shorey), we have also been busy making plans to ensure the continued value and success of our Committee via a Strategic Planning process. Last year we prepared our strategic plan under the leadership of Shaunda Patterson-Strachan, and we are beginning its implementation this year. Click here to see a copy of the Report reflecting our plans to date. Please join us as we work to build our ranks of corporate counsel and plaintiffs' lawyers, so that our committee continues to We bring together counsel from all sides - corporate counsel, plaintiffs' counsel, defense counsel, trade association, and governmental and regulatory counsel. The TIPS programs stand out because they offer unique opportunities for discourse among counsel with different perspectives.

Please know that it is truly a pleasure serving as Chair of the Life Insurance Law Committee. I do hope you have find the Committee's offerings to be of value to you. If you are not already a member, please consider joining us now. Give our Membership Coordinator, Adrienne Publicover, or me a call or send us an email to learn more about how membership in the Life Insurance Law Committee can benefit you.
