TIPS 75th Anniversary
INSURANCE COVERAGE LITIGATION COMMITTEE
-Message from the Chair-

Joan Cotkin
Joan Cotkin - Committee Chair

Greetings from your new Chair, Joan Cotkin!

At the Annual ABA meeting George Rockas, our immediate past Chair and Alan Rutkin, Chair-elect, adeptly ran our business meeting along with many past and future leaders in our Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee. We were introduced to our administrative co-chair, Joel Mosher, who is assisting us with recruiting new members as well as keeping up with the many necessary forms to comply with all deadlines. New members are always welcome and we encourage current members to spread the news about our great committee.

Alan Rutkin provided this summary of ICLC’s participation in the Annual Meeting that I wanted to share with the membership:

ICLC played a prominent and successful role in the August 2008 Annual ABA Meeting. "Billing Guidelines and Auditors-- Are They Ethical? Are They Legal?", ICLC's program Saturday morning, featured presentations that attendees found "outstanding" and "thought-provoking." Saturday night we enjoyed a committee dinner at the Cornell Club of New York. We were led by our roastmaster and toastmaster, Jill Berkeley. Following the dinner, many of the attendees continued the Committee's business in an informal meeting at the Campbell Apartment bar, formerly the office and salon of the 1920s railroad mogul John Campbell. Despite a late evening, at 7:30 a.m. the following morning ICLC enjoyed a strong showing at its business meeting. Of course, ICLC was also represented at many other TIPS functions including an Ellis Island reception, a UN dinner, and various TIPS administrative events.
Now that the Annual Meeting is behind us, I am excited to talk about this year’s agenda and calendar. Our 2009 Mid-Year program, the 17th Annual Mid-Year Meeting, is entitled “California Coverage Dreaming On a Winter’s Day” and will take place February 27 through March 1, 2009 in the historic downtown Biltmore Hotel, a beautiful example of art deco/ Moroccan inspired architecture. It was at the Biltmore that the Oscar was first designed on a cocktail napkin, and its uniquely beautiful lobby will be recognized by movie buffs as the location for many a dramatic scene.

The program is coming together quickly under program chair Alan Van Etten and will cover a variety of topics including: Playing Coverage Tetris -- Placing the Excess Puzzle Pieces when the Primary Insurer Settles; Effectively Mediating and Settling Complex Claims; Climate Change and its Challenges for Policyholders and Insurers; Insurance Ramifications of the Subprime/Credit Mortgage Crises; The Best and Worst Jurisdictions for Insurers; Stipulated Judgments--The latest Battle in the Coverage of Settlements War; and a reprise of our hot topic at the 2008 ABA Annual Meeting: Billing Guidelines and Auditors --Are They Ethical-Are They Legal?

In addition to these educational and intellectual treats we are in the process of arranging some serious partying as well--including hopefully a Friday night at one of the premier nightclubs in the newly revived historic downtown bank district. Many other exciting developments are at hand, including our publications and next year’s Annual Meeting program in Chicago, where we are already planning an exciting program. We look forward to the coming year and seeing you all in LA. After all, networking is one of the many strengths of our committee.

The overall strength of our committee is also based on the involvement of our members. Consider becoming more involved in the committee. Are you interested in helping to plan one of our programs or making a presentation at a program? Maybe you have written something recently or are interested in writing an article for a publication. Please let us know how we can get you involved.
