Each month E-TIPS features one of our 34 General Committees in the "Committee Spotlight." Our featured Committee for February is Health and Disability Insurance Law. This Committee is Chaired by Helen Kemp of the Retirement & Benefits Service Division Office of the State Comptroller, Hartford, CT.
The Health and Disability Insurance Law Committee concentrates on matters relating to health, disability, long-term care, accident, medical and hospital expense insurance contracts. It examines the laws and the regulation of laws governing the health and disability areas, including state insurance laws; ERISA; ADA and COBRA; and the interplay between state and federal law. In addition, the Committee focuses on relationships among insurers; insured; third-party administrators; health care providers; plan sponsors and fiduciaries; and managed care entities.

The following seminar is co-sponsored by the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) and will take place during the upcoming ABA Midyear Meeting.
The Fellows of the American Bar Foundation Present:
Employment Discrimination Law in Action
Saturday, February 9, 2008
2:00 – 4:30 PM
Brentwood Room, Hyatt Regency Century Plaza
This seminar will present findings from the Employment Discrimination Litigation Research Project of the American Bar Foundation, which collected data from a large random sample of federal court filings for the period 1988-2003; conducted interviews with 100 plaintiffs, defendants, and their counsel; and matched data from the EEOC charge database for the same period. This uniquely comprehensive study reveals how employment discrimination litigation actually operates, including the prospects for success, the size of typical settlements and awards, the role that the race and gender of plaintiffs plays, and the profound importance of legal counsel to case outcomes. Interviews with parties raise serious concerns about the system.
