A Word from the Chair
By: Thomas M. Downey
ESLR Committee Chair
Welcome to a new year with the Excess, Surplus
Lines, and Reinsurance Committee. As the new Committee Chair, I write to provide a summary
of the Committee's ambitious plans for the 1998-99 year. I hope each of you will be
actively involved in implementing these plans. In short, the Committee's objectives are
simple:
1.To provide Committee members with valuable assistance for developing a practice in the
excess, surplus line and reinsurance area;
2.To increase Committee exposure within the insurance industry by partnering with non-ABA
entities in sponsoring national and regional programs; and,
3.To increase Committee membership by targeting ABA members and non-ABA attorneys.
The information set forth on this page is intended to help us reach these goals.
It is the objective of every TIPS Committee to seek out and welcome new members. While
ESLR membership has steadily increased over the years, there is immense room for
expansion. In short, the broad scope of our Committee transcends many different practice
areas. Consequently, with focused marketing efforts we have successfully recruited new
members who previously overlooked the many aspects of their own practice that relate to
ESLR.
New Committee
Vice-Chairs
ESLR is proud to announce the appointment of
several new Committee Vice-Chairs for the 1998-99 year. Although most of you know these
individuals, here is a brief introduction:
David Anderson is an associate with the Chicago law firm of Schiff, Hardin & Waite. He
practices in the insurance and reinsurance area. Prior to embarking on his legal career he
obtained his C.P.C.U. designation while working as a reinsurance underwriter.
Donald Uttrich is an associate in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Jackson & Campbell.
Don practices insurance and environmental litigation. Don has traveled extensively and has
a Masters degree in Foreign Service.
Doug Krenzer is an in-house attorney with Acceptance Insurance Company in Council Bluff,
Iowa. Doug works primarily with high exposure losses in the Eastern states.
Michael Fandel is a partner in the Seattle law firm of Graham & Dunn. We recently
lured Mike away from the tight grip of the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee. Mike's
practice includes insurance, environmental litigation, product liability, and commercial
litigation.
Gerald Murray is Vice-president and General Counsel INEX (formerly the Illinois Insurance
Exchange). Gerry has worked in the excess and surplus line insurance industry for over 20
years. He is a frequent author and speaker regarding excess and surplus line topics.
Deborah Prawiec is an attorney with CNA Re in Chicago. Debbie is a reinsurance contract
specialist. As an avid sports fan, Debbie has agreed to Chair the ESLR sub-committee on
Sports Entertainment.
Robert Ferm is a partner in the Denver law firm of Hall & Evans. Bob is a familiar
face to the ESLR Committee. He previously served as a Vice-Chair and he recently returned
from service as the Chair of the Public Regulation of Insurance Committee.
The rest of the Vice-Chairs for 1998-99 are returning from last year and need no
introduction.
1998-99 ESLR
Newsletter Editor
The new ESLR Newsletter Editor is Linda Lasley
of Reinsurance Counsel in Pasadena, California. Linda replaces outgoing newsletter editor
Michael Knoerzer of Werner & Kennedy in New York. We thank Michael for his fine
performance as editor of our newsletter over the last twelve months. As you know, the
success of our newsletter requires contributions from ESLR committee members. We encourage
each of you to submit case law summaries, news items, and/or industry gossip to Linda for
publication in the newsletter. You can reach her at LLasley@ReinsuranceCounsel.com or reinsurance@earthlink.net.
1998-99 ESLR Web
Master
Former Committee Chair Larry Schiffer of
Werner & Kennedy has agreed to continue his role as the Committee Web Master. For
those of you who do not know Larry is also the Chair of TIPS Technology Committee and he
is largely responsible for the ESLR Committee's outstanding web page. In many ways, Larry
is the Master of Web Masters! The ESLR Committee web page is one of the most comprehensive
and useful web pages within the ABA. Like the newsletter, the utility of the Committee web
page requires regular contributions from all committee members. Please forward material
for posting on the web site to Larry at lschiffe@llgm.com
throughout the year. Obviously Larry will determine whether the material submitted is
appropriate for posting on the web page.
