A Word from the Chair
By: Thomas M. Downey
ESLR Committee Chair

Welcome to a new year with the Excess, Surplus Lines and Reinsurance Committee. As the new Committee Chair, I would like to thank the Committee's Last Retiring, Kenneth Roberts, for his fine leadership and many contributions to the Committee. I hope to continue the Committee tradition of providing valuable assistance to the membership. I also intend to focus on membership involvement in the Committee and the TIPS Section. As most of you know, TIPS is not an exclusive social club, but an open network of professionals. In short, the broad scope of our Committee transcends many different practice areas. Accordingly, the Committee presents practicing attorneys with many networking opportunities through a wide range of Committee activities, including continuing education programs, publications and legislative projects.

The Committee has ambitious plans for the 1998-99 year. In response to Committee Membership surveys, the Committee Leadership has planned Regional and National programs on a wide variety of topics. Most of these programs will be co-sponsored with other industry organizations. On a national level, the Committee is planning a program for the ABA's Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, next summer and will again co-sponsor the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee's Midyear Meeting in Monterey, California on February 25-27, 1998. On a regional level, programs are currently in the works for San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. In addition, the Committee Leadership has negotiated a joint meeting of the Committee and ARIAS/US, one of the leading reinsurance arbitration professional organizations, scheduled for April 22-24, 1999.

The Committee Directory was distributed recently. This is a very useful tool for staying in touch with other Committee members. Should you need information regarding local rules in a different jurisdiction or a place to hold a deposition, consider contacting another Committee member. The Committee Directory provides current address, telephone and e-mail information for all members. If you did not receive a Committee Directory, please contact Cassandra Griggs at the TIPS Staff Office, (312) 988-5573.

Finally, I would like to emphasize to all members that there has never been a better time to be active in this Committee and the TIPS Section. The Committee is networking with more industry organizations now than it has ever before. This translates into more speaking and writing opportunities and more business and professional development opportunities on both a local and national level. While I am the first to admit it takes time to be active in an organization, I truly believe the rewards are well worth the effort. Should you have any questions or comments about the Committee, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at (510) 835-6716 or E-mail: tdowney@larson-burnham.com.
