A Word from the Chair

ESLR Committee Chair
Use This Directory
Our first newsletter for the 1999-2000 year will contain a state-by-state directory of all
ESLR committee members. Make sure that you are listed with all of the correct information.
Then keep this directory by your telephone so that you can use it as a reference for the
upcoming year. As all of the attorneys in this committee are somehow involved with excess,
surplus lines or reinsurance, you have almost 1,000 attorneys, located throughout the
country, who may be able to assist you in some way. The ESLR attorneys are the greatest
resource of the committee.
In that regard, I am encouraging all ESLR members to
consider using this directory to find local counsel. Not only will you have the
opportunity to work with a fellow ESLR member, but as you get to know more and more people
in our committee, you will realize that these attorneys are really great people as well. I
encourage you to use this directory and get to know other ESLR members in your field of
practice.
Time and Money Saving Idea
We all want to save time and money. When traveling for meetings or depositions, I have
often used other attorney's offices for those purposes. One call to an attorney can set up
a convenient conference room for a deposition. We have also let other visiting attorneys
use our offices. No hotel meeting room charge or catering costs for a $40 pot of coffee.
This has saved me and my clients time and money. Who doesn't want that?
The ESLR committee members should help other out-of-state
attorneys and I would ask that you offer the use of conference rooms to fellow ESLR
out-of-state attorneys. This is a great way to save on the cost of meeting or deposition
rooms. These are direct cost savings that we can all pass on to our clients. Therefore, I
would encourage each one of you to fill out the survey form and
agree to participate in the ESLR conference room sharing program.
We plan to include this directory on the ESLR web page for
ESLR members only so that you can locate offices that can conveniently host meetings or
depositions. To participate in this program, there is no requirement that you provide
access to your conference rooms to ESLR members at all times. Rather, it is an
acknowledgment that you are willing to allow a fellow ESLR member to use conference room
space that would otherwise be empty that day. The more ESLR members that we can have
participate in this program, the more opportunities that we will have in passing on
savings to our clients. Additionally, what better way to meet other ESLR attorneys located
throughout the country.
Meetings
ESLR will have a mid-year business meeting at the Insurance Coverage Litigation mid-winter
meeting in Coronado, California on February 23, 28, 2000. Plan on attending the insurance
coverage meeting as ESLR will be putting on an insurance coverage program and will also
have a mid-year business meeting to discuss upcoming activities and programs. This will
include a report on the July 2000 New York/London program. I would encourage all of you to
attend that meeting in Coronado. Check the TIPS web page for additional information. We
are also co-sponsoring the insurance insolvency program in San Francisco, December 2-4,
1999 and will be working with ARIAS for a reinsurance meeting in April 2000. Regional
meetings are also in the works.
I want to thank Tom Downey, the last chair of this
committee for all work that he has done. His efforts have made our committee shine in
TIPS. Also, Linda Lasley did a great job with the newsletter last year. Last, I need to
thank all of the participants on our electronic commerce program at the annual meeting in
Atlanta. It was a very informative program and we intend to continue being active in this
area with at least one regional meeting in Spring on this topic.
Last, send your case notes, articles and other items of
interest to David Anderson, our newsletter editor at Schiff Hardin & Waite, Suite
6600, 233 S. Wacker Dr., Chicago, Illinois 60606, fax (312) 258-5600, e-mail: danderson@schiffhardin.com. We look forward
to hearing from you and we hope to be providing more opportunities for members to become
involved in the ESLR committee.
