A Word from the Chair
By Kenneth M. Roberts
Schiff Hardin & Waite, Chicago, IL

It's been a busy couple of months for the ESLR Committee! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of you again in Toronto, where ESLR (along with co-sponsors Corporate Counsel and Self Insurers and Risk Managers) sponsored an August 1 program entitled "Corporate Counsel's Guide to Excess Insurance and reinsurance." The program was excellent, and I would like to thank speakers Martha Bannerman, Mark Christerson, Linda Lasley, Robert Mangino, Richard Waterman, Jeff Jones, and Rick Atwood for participating in two very informative panels on excess insurance and reinsurance. Also, a special thanks to incoming Chair Tom Downey for his efforts in putting together the program.

Just prior to the program, ESLR held a well-attended business meeting, with guest speaker Rachel Rivlin of Lexington Insurance Company. My thanks to Rachel for aptly informing the Committee on recent legislative and regulatory developments in the surplus lines market. That evening, we held our speakers' dinner at Verona Ristorante, a charming Italian restaurant in Toronto's theater district. Wes Sunu did a great job organizing the dinner, which was enjoyed by all.

Barely back from Toronto, Wes Sunu and David Anderson proceeded to speak on Thursday, August 6 at a regional program in Chicago, moderated by Tom Downey, in his first official act as Chair of the Committee. Co-sponsored by REACH (Reinsurance Education and Communication Hotline), Wes and David spoke about the attorney-client privilege and work product doctrine in the context of insurance coverage and reinsurance litigation. Attendance at the regional, which was held at CNA's headquarters in the Chicago Loop, was nothing short of phenomenal, with approximately 90 to 100 participants in a very diverse audience consisting of reinsurance underwriters, brokers, in-house counsel, and attorneys in private practice. Thanks to Wes, David, Tom, and Marilyn Laughlin of CNA Re for putting together such an excellent regional program.

Finally, I would like to thank Jill Berkeley and David Anderson of Schiff Hardin & Waite for their invaluable assistance during my tenure as Chair. Thanks also to Michael Knoerzer for four wonderful newsletters. I leave you in excellent hands with incoming Chair Tom Downey and Chair-Elect Wes Sunu, who I know will continue the Committee's commitment to increase membership and overall excellence. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Committee.
