Let's say you are working on a brief, writing an opinion letter, or preparing an internal
memo and you need a good explanation for an insurance or reinsurance term. While you could
go to the library and check a variety of insurance-related publications, glossaries, or
general dictionaries, you now have an alternative. From the comfort of your desk and with
the click of your mouse, you can now visit a variety of insurance and reinsurance
glossaries and dictionaries on the Internet. Instead of photocopying or re-typing a
succinct description of Clash Cover, you can hop onto the web, click and copy the
definition, and paste it right into your document (with proper attribution to your source,
of course).
There are a variety of sources available on the web that provide insurance and reinsurance
definitions. Many insurance brokers and reinsurance intermediaries have glossaries on
their web sites, as do companies, trade organizations, and schools. For example, Guy
Carpenter, a reinsurance intermediary, has a great reinsurance glossary. Other sites
include: the Insurance News Network's
insurance glossary ; E.W. Blanch's reinsurance
glossary (another reinsurance intermediary) ; SCOR's glossary of reinsurance terms as used
in France ; RenaissanceRe's
link to an educational site of insurance terms ; the University of Calgary's
glossary of insurance and financial planning terms ; Gill & Roeser's glossary of reinsurance
terms ; and a searchable Rupps Insurance &
Risk Management Glossary.
Don't forget the links listed on the ESLR website . For general dictionaries, check out
the web dictionary. This is just the tip of the iceburg. Dictionaries and glossaries
abound for virtually all subjects. Try one out and see what you think. You may find that
searching terms on the web may be the best way to find exactly what you are looking for.
