BUSINESS
LITIGATION COMMITTEE
-Message from The Chair-
Welcome everyone to another terrific year with the Business Litigation Committee. My name is Sue Farina and I am Chair of the BLC for the 2006-2007 year. The BLC has some great activities planned for the year including the ABA/TIPS's first Audio Webcast CLE entitled Lost Profits in Commercial Damages and Intellectual Property Litigation, which will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 from 1:00-2:30 P.M. EST. The Audio Webcast CLE format replaces the TeleCLEs and provides the audience with the ability to view, for example, PowerPoint materials while the program continues. Attending Audio Webcast CLEs is a great way to catch up on the latest law related to particular topics. Like the TeleCLE forerunner, they run only 90 minutes and you can attend them without leaving your desk! Click on the link on the Home Page for details on how to sign up for the October program.
In addition to the October Audio Webcast CLE on lost profit damages, the BLC is planning two more Audio Webcast CLEs for later in the year. The website and winter newsletter will include information on these programs as specific dates and times are finalized. If you are interested in coordinating or being a speaker for a Video Webcast CLE, please contact me or Wyndall Ivey, Chair of the BLC's Audio Webcast CLE sub-committee. They are a great way to become involved in committee leadership and also offer speakers the opportunity to reach a national audience.
Speaking of a national audience, together with TIPS' Intellectual Property Committee, the BLC sponsored the Keep it Secret, Keep it Safe: Protecting Intellectual Property and Trade Secrets CLE program at the 2006 Annual Meeting in Honolulu. Speakers Cindy Kernick, David Makous, Joel Mohrman, and Jon Parritz provided insightful tips and strategies on protecting intellectual property and trade secrets. Their wealth of knowledge and experience was greatly appreciated by the audience who rated the program a smashing success. Indeed, speaker Joel Mohrman, the BLC's Chair-Elect, has been asked to publish the written materials he provided for the program in ALI-ABA's The Practical Lawyer magazine. Congratulations Joel!
The BLC is already working on its CLE program for the 2007 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Under the leadership of Vice-Chair Jim Myrick, the BLC is planning what promises to be an excellent program on business divorce - what happens when partnerships, LLCs, or LLPs break up. Watch for information regarding the CLE as the year progresses.
Aside from the CLE programs the committee is planning, for the first time this year the BLC is sponsoring a TortSource edition. Each of the three articles included in the winter edition of TortSource will be drafted by a BLC member. We are excited about this opportunity and hope to repeat it annually.
Drafting articles for a future BLC sponsored TortSource edition or for a BLC newsletter is a great way to be published. The committee is always looking for people who are willing to write an article for our newsletters. If you are interested in being published, or know a colleague who might be interested, please contact Newsletter Editor Bob Caldwell or Assistant Newsletter Editor Doug Albritton.
I look forward to the many activities the BLC has planned for this year. I also look forward to meeting BLC members at TIPS Fall or Spring Meetings, or at the ABA's Mid-Year or Annual Meetings. If you attend any of these meetings, look for notices of BLC business meetings in your TIPS registration materials. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Sincerely,
Susan H. Farina
