ANIMAL LAW COMMITTEE
Animal Disaster Relief Network
Read of the latest ADRN accomplishments and MORE..
The TIPS Animal Law Committee has created the ABA Animal Disaster Relief Network and has thus far
sponsored two teleconferences with the following participating associations and organizations:
American Bar Association (ABA), Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Maddie’s
Fund, American Prosecutors’ Research Institute, the Minnesota Humane Society, the New York City
Bar Association, Animal Ark and Second Chance Rescue. More are welcome to join us.
The purpose of the teleconference is to address both short-term and long-term needs and solutions
with regard to animal disaster relief. Involved associations and organizations are circumventing
the red tape that prevents action in a disaster context. Animals are broadly defined and include
fish, wildlife, and domestic animals.
For more information about the network or to recommend other associations or organizations to
participate, contact Network Coordinator and ABA-TIPS Animal Law Committeee Chair, Barbara J.
Gislason, at gislasonbj@aol.com. Network participant Animal Legal Defense Fund has developed a
list of animal disaster relief questions and posted FAQs on their Web site at www.aldf.org.
ABA lawyers, paralegals and law students interested in participating in research activities are
encouraged to immediately contact Dana Campbell at dcampbell@aldf.org to find out more about how
they can help and link to this Web site.
Those interested in creating Animal Disaster Relief model legislation at both state and federal
levels should contact ABA-TIPS Animal Law Committee Chair-Elect, Kristina Hancock, at
kristina.hancock@hklaw.com and those interested in drafting model Animal Rescue Standard Operating
Procedures (SOPs), or addressing animal-related Incident Command System (ICS) problems, should
contact ABA-TIPS Animal Law Committee Vice-Chair Judge Ben Zvenia at
drzvenia@myfedlawyer.com.
