The Honorable Arthur M. Monty Ahalt was appointed to the Circuit Court for Prince George's County, Maryland on February 9, 1982. Judge Ahalt retired from the bench on September 17, 1999 at the end of his term and commenced a career as an ADR neutral and technology innovator. He has been recalled as a Judge by the Court of Appeals to sit on specially assigned cases. Theodore L. Banks (Ted) is Chief Counsel & Director, Compliance Policy at Kraft Foods in Northfield, Illinois, whose responsibility also includes records management, antitrust, and supervision of computer applications used in the Law & Compliance Department.

Throughout his 30-year career, Ted has also directed many substantial corporate transactions and litigated cases.  He supervised the $19 billion acquisition of Nabisco by Kraft, and the $8.7 billion IPO of Kraft Foods Inc.  He successfully coordinated the defense of the antitrust challenge by the State of New York to Kraft's acquisition of the Shredded Wheat cereal business through a full trial on the merits. 

Even before there were PCs, Ted helped develop computer applications used in the Kraft Law Department, with an emphasis on tools that helped serve clients.   In the corporate compliance area, he has focused on using adult learning techniques to make these efforts educationally effective.  He has taught hundreds of attorneys how to communicate the compliance message effectively through the use of video, audio, computer presentations, intranets, and computer-based training – and by making sure the audience has a little fun.

Ted has written numerous articles on antitrust and legal automation topics, and co-edited the Corporate Legal Compliance Handbook, published by Aspen in 2002.  His multi-volume treatise on distribution law, also published by Aspen, is now in its second edition.  He is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education programs, where he strives not to bore the attendees too much.

Judge Christina M. Habas was appointed to the Denver District Court in December, 2003 and is currently assigned to the Civil Division. Nils Jensen is a senior litigator with the British Columbia Prosecution Service in Victoria BC.  He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law where he has taught evidence, trial and appellate advocacy.  He has also taught trial advocacy, criminal law and evidence in Canada’s first Inuit Law Program in Iqualuit, Nunavut.

Tom O'Connor is a nationally known consultant, speaker and writer in the area of computerized litigation support systems. He is a New England native who graduated from The Johns Hopkins University in 1972 with a BA in Political Science. After attending law school for one year at The University of Notre Dame, Tom returned to Baltimore and undertook a career as a paralegal specializing in complex litigation. His initial exposure to a document intensive case came several years later when he assisted several public interest firms in Boston with a class action voting rights suit brought on behalf of patients at state hospitals. Dan has a LLB/JD from the Universities of Windsor and Detroit and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1993. Prior to joining LAWPRO Dan practiced for eight years in the Litigation Department of a Niagara Falls area law firm. He has advanced technology skills, and for several years also held the Manager of Information Systems position at his firm.

Dan is a prolific writer and speaker on risk management, technology and law practice management issues. He is a veteran of hundreds of presentations at CLE programs and conferences all over North America.

Dan is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management.

Dan is very active in the ABA's Law Practice Management Section. He was Chair of ABA TECHSHOW 2007 and writes a monthly column for the Section’s Law Practice Magazine. One of those columns won the 2007 Edge Award for Best Regular Column. He Editor-in-Chief of the Law Practice Today Webzine (www.lawpracticetoday.org), and a member of the Practice Management Advisors Task Force. He has contributed chapters to several books published by the ABA LPM Section.

Through a variety of roles Dan has and continues to actively participate in the Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations. He is currently a Member at Large on the CBA’s National Sections Council and is NSC Liaison to the CBA CLE Committee. He is a Past Chair of the CBA’s Law Practice Management and Technology Section, and remains on the executive. He sits on sits on the OBA’s Main CLE Committee, is on the executives of the OBA Solo, Small Firm and General Practice and LPM Sections, and is a past Chair of the OBA Technology Committee.

Catherine Sanders Reach has provided practice technology assistance for lawyers for seven years with the American Bar Association's Legal Technology Resource Center and currently serves as its Director.  Ms. Reach has a masters' degree in library and information science from the University of Alabama. She has written articles for local and national legal publications, co-authors a blog called Site-tation, and has given presentations on the use of technology in law  practice across the country. She is currently serving on the ABA TECHSHOW Planning Board for 2008 and on the editorial advisory board for Law Technology News and Law.com’s LegalTech.

Jeff Richardson

Jeffrey E. Richardson is a partner in the New Orleans office of Adams and Reese, LLP, a firm with almost 300 attorneys in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Washington, D.C.  He has served on the firm’s Technology Committee for many years and has been very involved with his firm’s disaster recovery planning, both before and after Katrina.  He is also the Chair of the Louisiana State Bar Association’s Technology Committee.

Mr. Richardson's practice areas include class action and complex litigation, products liability litigation, personal injury litigation, constitutional litigation and legal ethics. He has represented defendants in numerous complex cases involving allegations of product defects, fraud, discrimination and negligence. For example, when the city of New Orleans became the first municipality in the United States to sue the gun industry, Mr. Richardson played a leading role on the team that successfully defended the gun manufacturers, culminating in the Louisiana Supreme Court rejecting the lawsuit. Morial v. Smith & Wesson Corp., et al., 785 So. 2d 1 (La.), cert. denied, 534 U.S. 951 (2001). Additionally, Mr. Richardson has had the opportunity to serve as visiting in-house counsel for a Fortune 25 company in New York City, working on complex class action and tort cases in numerous jurisdictions. 

Mr. Richardson also has extensive experience defending clients in complex class action cases with multiple defendants. He has served as court-appointed Liaison Counsel for Defendants in several cases in Louisiana state and federal courts in which the plaintiffs have sought statewide and nationwide class certification. For example, in a proposed nationwide class action against the CCA treated wood industry, Mr. Richardson served as Liaison Counsel for Defendants and played a leading role on the defense team that defended removal of the litigation to federal court and defeated class certification. Ardoin v. Stine Lumber Co., et al., 298 F.Supp.2d 422 (W.D. La. 2003); Ardoin v. Stine Lumber Co., et al., 220 F.R.D. 459 (W.D. La. 2004).

Marc Rotenberg is Executive Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC.ORG) in Washington, DC. He teaches information privacy law at Georgetown University Law Center and has testified before Congress on many issues, including access to information, encryption policy, consumer protection, computer security, and communications privacy. He testified before the 9-11 Commission on "Security and Liberty: Protecting Privacy, Preventing Terrorism." He has served on several national and international advisory panels, including the expert panels on Cryptography Policy and Computer Security for the OECD, the Legal Experts on Cyberspace Law for UNESCO, and the Countering Spam program of the ITU. He currently chairs the ABA Committee on Privacy and Information Protection. He is the former Chair of the Public Interest Registry, which manages the .ORG domain. He is editor of Privacy and Human Rights and The Privacy Law Sourcebook, and co-editor (with Daniel J. Solove and Paul Schwartz) of Information Privacy Law (Aspen Publishing 2007).
