Toby Brown

Toby Brown is the VP of Marketing for Manexa (www.manexa.com). He also works on contract with the Utah State Bar as the Director of Communications (www.utahbar.org). In addition to managing communications, he previously directed the CLE, Technology and Pro Bono Departments for the Utah State Bar. Finally, Toby is the President of Gnawledge.Net LLC. Gnawlegde.Net provides strategic technology and marketing consulting services. In this role, he served as a shared CIO for the New Hampshire Bar (www.nhbar.org) and the Rhode Island Bar (www.ribar.com) securing strategic technology partners and provided education and technical consulting to each Bar and their members.

Separately, Toby has served on the Utah Electronic Commerce Council, the policy instrument for Utah's on-line government portal www.utah.gov. He also served on the Steering Committee for the OASIS LegalXML group, www.legalxml.org. LegalXML is working to develop international standards for XML documents involved on court filings and other legal applications. Additionally, Toby serves on a variety of national technology standards boards and committees, primarily covering, XML standards and electronic signatures.

Toby served as the Board Chair for SmartUtah (www.smartutah.org) through the completion of its mission. Formerly he served as the Treasurer for the Multicultural Legal Center Board and on the Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake Board (Past President) and on the Board of Trustees for the Firefighters Credit Union and has served on a great variety of bar related committees and task forces, including the Access to Justice, Futures, MJP and MDP Task Forces. Previously, Toby worked as a law firm administrator for Snell & Wilmer and for Holme Roberts & Owen. Following this, he provided law management and technology consulting to lawyers and law firms. He has presented on a great variety of law management, technology and legal topics to lawyers, bar associations, legal assistants, law students and legal personnel. As well, he has published numerous articles on law management and legal technology topics.

Toby received both his BS and MS in Economics from the University of Utah.
