Use ClearType, a Windows XP feature, to improve screen readability for both laptop and desktop LCD (flat panel) displays

- Click Start and select Control Panel
- Select Display OR Right click on the Desktop and select Properties
- Click on the Appearance tab in the Display Properties window
- Click on the Effects button
- Check the box next to "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:"
- In the pull down menu that is immediately beneath that option, select ClearType
- Click OK, then OK
ClearType has now been activated on your computer. To fine-tune ClearType, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx
If you don't like the result produced by turning on ClearType, do the following to turn it off.
- Click Start and select Control Panel
- Select Display OR Right click on the Desktop and select Properties
- Click on the Appearance tab in the Display Properties window
- Click on the Effects button
- First, select Standard from the pull down menu below, "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:" and see if you like that any better. If not, try step 5a.
- Uncheck the box next to "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:"
- Click OK, then OK
