The long-awaited results of the 2002 ABA Legal Technology Survey
will be published in July 2003, in a seried of five reports on law office
technology; litigation and courtroom technology; Web and communication
technology; online research; and mobile lawyers. If you simply can't wait
until then, check out these highlights from the survey results,
presented at the ABA's 2003 TECHSHOW on April 4, 2003. Data from all five
of the upcoming print reports are included, and you might be surprised by the
results. For instance, did you know that almost 30% of law firm technology
budgets are expected to be under $2500 in 2003? Of course, that's not the

- Presented on March 27, 2003, at the Annual Meeting of the National Federation of
Paralegal Associations (NFPA) in Newport, R.I. Focuses on the ethical
issues facing paralegals when using technology and especially the
Internet to provide legal services. Coverage begins with a history
of the paralegal and legal professions, then addresses the
implications of newly evolving definitions of the terms "paralegal"
and "practice of law" against a backdrop of longstanding ethical prohibitions against
the unauthorized practice of law (UPL). Both the ABA Model Rules and
rules promulgated by the national paralegal organizations are discussed.
