Legal Associations

BARASSN-L
Listserv hosted by the ABA and focusing on issues relevant to bar associations, including but not limited to technology. Other issues include bar management, bar discipline, dues, meetings, bar programs, the judiciary, government relations, media relations, bar reports and legal services.

BAR-WEBSTERS
A forum sponsored by the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE) and hosted on the ABA web site, designed for anyone involved in the creation, maintenance and development of bar association web sites.

LEGAL-WEBMASTERS
A list maintained by the Legal Information Institute at the Cornell Law School and designed for legal services and pro bono webmasters or those interested in the topic. To join, contact Hugh Calkins (hcalkins@ptla.org) with your name, e-mail address, interest, and the name of your program or organization.

LS-TECH
A list maintained by the Project for the Future of Equal Justice as a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among those working in technology in the legal services community. Contact Hugh Calkins (hcalkins@ptla.org) or Julia Gordon (jgordon@clasp.org) with your name, e-mail address, interest and the name of your program or organization.

LSWEBLIST
A mailing list for the exchange of ideas and information among people developing and maintaining web sites for legal services, pro bono and related programs.

Nonprofits

By the Cup
TechSoup’s monthly e-mail newsletter, By the Cup, might be aptly described as, well--rich and satisfying. Issues are organized around a central theme, such as emerging technology, web building and technology planning. And the TechSoup discussion boards are among the best in the field, so drop by often. TechSoup also co-hosts a series of online discussions with the Benton Foundation, including recent discussions on Evaluating and Improving Your Web Strategy, Technology and Communications Planning, and Adding Streaming Media to Your Web Site

CHARITYSOFT
Charity Channel sponsors dozens of forums, which reportedly attract thousands of members who send nearly a million and a half, messages a month. CHARITYSOFT is an online forum discussing software, the Internet and charities.

Dot Org
Dot Org is a new Internet publishing venture launched by Web and Internet strategy consultants Marc Osten and Michael Stein designed to help nonprofits share practical advice on making the most of the Internet. Dot Org publishes a free e-mail newsletter, web content and special reports on selected topics such as ASPs, online advocacy, fundraising and Internet presence. The first two issues of the newsletter cover the topic of e-mail newsletters.

NetAction Notes
NetAction is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting use of the Internet for effective grassroots citizen action campaigns, and to educating the public, policy makers, and the media about technology policy issues. The purpose of NetAction Notes is to share information about how to use the Internet for effective organizing and coalition-building with grassroots organizations, to offer suggestions and advice on outreach to organizations that are not online, and to point out opportunities for training and networking with online and grassroots activists. Traffic is relatively light, as the list is for announcements only.

Nonprofit Tech
Nonprofit Tech is a technology association that provides "human-centric, mission-focused, technology-based services to the nonprofit community." Through its online discussion list, it aims to "put ‘nonprofit technology’ on the world map," and promises to "engage, challenge, imagine, and create a sustainable role for the nonprofit sector in the new technology related economy."

Nonprofit Techie Listserv
CompassPoint Nonprofit Services is a nonprofit consulting and training organization located in the Bay Area. Its Nonprofit Techie Listserv is a lively and focused forum where people involved in technology administration can post resources, exchange ideas, and troubleshoot common problems. Recent discussions have included the pros and cons of purchasing home vs. office machines, and how to assess the best type of connection to the Internet (ISDN, DSL, or other options).

NPTalk
Nonprofits Policy and Technology Project (NPTalk) is a moderated electronic forum hosted by OMBWatch discussing how nonprofit organizations utilize information technologies in their public policy activities. The searchable archive includes topics such as Collaborative Virtual Office Tools, E-mail Advocacy, Web-based Polls and Surveys, Instant Messaging, and Technology Funding and Online Fundraising Resources.

ORGWEBMASTERS
A discussion list for webmasters representing nonprofits and quasi-governmental entities designed to provide mutual assistance to webmasters, encourage discussion of innovative technologies, and assist in making sites organizational sites profitable.

RIDERS
eRiders, a service of Tech Rocks, provides this informal discussion forum open to people providing technology assistance to nonprofit organizations as their core job responsibility. It covers everything from technology planning to setting up affordable local area networks, and reportedly has light to moderate traffic.

TechSoup--Directory of Nonprofit Online Discussion Lists
Why reinvent the wheel? TechSoup has a nicely annotated list of e-newsletters and online discussion lists--use it to supplement LTRC’s resources.

Tech4Impact
Jayne Cravens of Coyote Communications publishes the electronic newsletter Tech4Impact, which addresses: 1) how technology is used effectively by mission-based organizations and their supporters to benefit individuals, communities and the environment; 2) what tech and online tools, resources and practices are proving most valuable to these organizations and their volunteers; and 3) what the cultural and financial conditions, legislation, and other factors are that influence tech use by these groups.

TECHNOLOGY
One of Charity Channel’s newer forums, TECHNOLOGY is focused on the broader voluntary-sector social, management, strategic, legal, policy, privacy, and other issues brought about by the ever-increasing pace of technology--especially Internet technology. According to its owners, it is not, despite its name, a "techno-geek" forum--it welcomes individuals with little or no technical background, those who have a sweeping and in-depth knowledge of the Internet and other technologies, and everyone in between.
