Government Operations and Liability Committee
By Ronald J. Kramer
Ronald J. Kramer is chair of the Government Operations and Liability Committee and can be reached at Seyfarth Shaw, 131 South Dearborn Street, Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60603-5803, 312/460-5560, fax 312/460-7560, rkramer@seyfarth.com.
The Government Operations and Liability Committee, which addresses issues including local government organization and management, ordinances and administrative regulations, and public election law, as well as the various bases on which state and local government liability is predicated, is having an active year. At the 2008 Fall Conference in Chicago, Government Operations presented a program on workplace violence, as well as assisting with the other committees on a renewable energy session. In December, Committee members held a teleconference entitled “The Nuts and Bolts of Open Meetings Law, the FOIA, and Ethics.” At the Section’s very successful first virtual conference this spring, the Committee sponsored a session on new and pending federal employment law legislation. On July 31, 2009, during the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago, the Government Operations State Regulatory Practice Subcommittee is sponsoring “Feds Times 50—50 State Attorneys General Going After Your Company: Responding Successfully to Complex Multi-State Regulatory Compliance and Investigation Matters.” This should be an excellent program, and we hope everyone can attend. We are currently working on possible programming ideas for the Section’s Fall Conference in Austin. If you have any ideas or thoughts, please let me know at the address listed below..
There will be an All Committee Meeting at the Annual Meeting on July 31 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Everyone is invited. Government Operations will be there, and we hope you will join us to brainstorm how the Committee can best serve the Section membership this coming year.
This Committee and its subcommittees are only as productive as our members. We are always looking for members interested in becoming more active—whether that is writing an article for this newsletter, contributing to The Urban Lawyer , speaking at a conference or teleconference, helping organize a CLE program, attending meetings, or authoring or editing a book. Becoming more active is a great way to keep abreast of current events, credential yourself, get CLE, and network with colleagues interested in the same area of law as you. We are always looking for volunteers and ideas as well. We look forward to seeing you at the annual conference!
