Behavioral Sciences Committee Profile

Join the Behavioral Sciences Committee to address the full range of legal issues that concern psychiatry, psychology, and related behavioral sciences.

The Committee List Serve is an opportunity for dialogue related to issues emerging regarding the legal implications of new information on the neuroscience of behavior and other related subjects.  For example, given increasing incontrovertible evidence of biological factors in human behavior, what are the implications for the concepts of intent and negligence, and the control of antisocial behavior?  What is insanity -- and does it fit in with fanaticism and terrorism?  How are biology and culture related in the context of behavior -- and where does the law come in?

The Committee is also exploring future program opportunities.

Committee Chair Sandra Nye’s leadership on the Committee coincides with her practice that focuses on behavioral health practice, mental health and related probate issues.  She has the pleasure and excitement of cross-disciplinary practice, which results from her masters of social work and diverse training in psychotherapy, family therapy and forensics.

Voice Over Internet Protocol Commitee

Join the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Committee to be on cusp of this cutting edge technology that will likely revolutionize the "telephone" infrastructure of not only this country, but around the world.    VoIP Committee Chair Konrad Trope spoke recently about a technology conference in Singapore where he served as a panelist about the growth of VoIP technology.  "I was the only American attorney at the Conference.  I was questioned repeatedly about the FCC, Congress, the President, and the various state PUC's all seeking to 'regulate' Internet phone calls [VoIP], and how that might translate into VoIP regulation in other countries.  Every technological or policy development in this area impacts cross-border transactions because there are no borders for a VoIP transmission or call."

Members of the Committee have identified and developed several projects all aimed at producing monographs and papers, which comprehensively addresses the technological, legal, political, and economic aspects of VoIP deployment both in the United States and in foreign countries. Members of the various sub-committees are actively working on high profile projects such as: creating and updating a global matrix of the legislative and administrative laws and regulations concerning VoIP in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.  The committee is also researching and drafting a monograph that explains VoIP technology for purposes of assisting attorneys who advise clients about new technologies and tracking and monitoring the FCC, the House of Representatives and the Senate on legislative and administrative agency actions that impact the deployment of VoIP systems.  The Committee seeks new members to assist with these current projects or new ideas for additional projects.

You are invited to attend the Committee’s meeting and CLE program at the ABA Annual Meeting on August 11, at 10 a.m., entitled: Ethical Issues for attorneys and clients in Deployment of VoIP Systems.   The Committee looks forward to meeting you and answering your questions at their panel at the Westin San Francisco Market Street.
