Committee Profiles --- Updates & Leadership Opportunities

Electronic Filing Committee

Electronic Filing Committee Chair Pia Angelikis states “I am extremely fortunate to be part of such a dynamic committee.  Our membership includes practitioners as well as vendors and members of trade associations.  Thus, we share a variety of perspectives and knowledge on topics such as court filing, eTrust/eNotarization and e-voting.

Join this committee  to address the legal questions surrounding electronic filing and related issues to provide guidance to courts, attorneys, vendors, and the public in areas such as court filings, agency filings, and information provided to or obtained from government over the Internet, and voting.  The committee works to preserve the well established legal protections of the paper world as the legal community transitions to a more electronic world.

The main project for 2007 is to begin drafting Model Rules for Electronic Filing in state courts.  The committee seeks volunteers, particularly with experience in federal or state court electronic filing.  The working group will help gather and analyze the electronic filing rules.  The first step is compiling all the existing state court electronic filing rules into one document for review and analysis.  Please submit your resume to Julia Gillespie at gillespj@staff.abanet.org if you would like to participate in this group.

The committee has an active eTrust subcommittee that is working in collaboration with LegalXML-OASIS to develop best practices for electronic notarization.  It has produced a White Paper which compares and contrasts between enotary and pnotary processes, and sets forth guidelines.

Nanotechnology Committee

Nanotechnology Committee and patent attorney Chair Tim Hsieh interacts on a daily basis with scientists who have nanotechnology related inventions that cut across many technical disciplines, such as chemistry, physics, and materials science.  Nanotechnology has national as well as global implications.  Join this committee for the opportunity to interact with individuals experienced in other aspects of nanotechnology such as environmental, health, and ethics.

The Nanotechnology Committee is at the forefront of the legal community’s efforts to identify and evaluate the legal implications of nanotechnology, to provide a forum for discussion, and to educate the membership on technical and legal aspects of nanotechnology. There are three issues, in particular, that the committee is currently focused on: intellectual property, ethics, and EHS (environmental, health, and safety).

The committee is currently working on two projects that would welcome volunteers.  First, the committee is planning a nanotechnology program for the annual meeting in San Francisco in conjunction with the Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources.  Second, the committee works to provide a forum for discussion and to educate the membership on technical aspects of nanotechnology, the committee is planning monthly meetings that will bring individuals knowledge in scientific, legal, ethical, environmental, public policy and/or legislative issues to speak.  An open discussion will follow.   The presentations will be made available on the committee’s website (e.g., as a downloadable podcast).   The committee website will reflect these future opportunities.
