Letter from the Chair
by Bonnie Fought
It is an honor and a pleasure for me to start this new Bar year
as the chair of the Section of Science and technology Law. Our Section
has experienced remarkable growth and positive change in a number
of areas over the past few years and as a result the Section has
never been stronger. We have grown our membership as well as our
financial reserves; we have become a leading force in the developing
legal arena of electronic commerce; we have offered a wide variety
of high quality educational programs in cutting edge areas of the
law and we have created new opportunities for new members in emerging
areas of the Law of Science and Technology.
One of the changes you may have noticed appears in the first sentience
of this letter - the change in the Section's name to help emphasize
the role of the Section as a leader in the fast-paced legal arenas
of science and technology. In addition to a new name, the Section
has many new faces. As one of the most rapidly growing Sections
in the ABA we have reached out to a variety of new members through
a number of membership activities. The success of these efforts
is evidenced by the growth of our membership to over 6,000 members
which has allowed the Section a second representative in the ABA
House of Delegates.
In addition, many of these new members have joined one of the Section's
committees. These committees focus on specific areas of the law
related to science and technology in fields such as Computer Law,
Electronic Commerce, communication Law, Life Sciences, Scientific
Evidence and many more. I encourage all of you to consider joining
any of the 26 substantive committees of the Section. There is no
additional cost to join the committees and you can view all of the
committees and join any of them through our web site at http://www.abanet.org/scitech/cmtejoin/html.
Even if you have joined Committees in the past, you may want to
travel to our web site to check out the new committees we have added
such as E-Privacy Law and Technical Standardization. Your participation
as an active member of the Section is important and also can be
a rewarding professional experience through participation in Committee
activities such as annual meeting program planning and presentation,
drafting publications with other lawyer and professional in the
field, or other Committee activities.
In addition to the Committees, the Section has several listservs
including new listservs in the areas of Internet and Cyberspace,
E-Privacy Law, and Technical Standardization. Section members may
join any of the discussion lists at no extra charge. Please visit
our web site to add your name to the listservs that best map your
areas of interest. http://www.abanet.org/scitech/scilists.html.
We welcome your participation in these and other Section initiatives.
What would you like to see the Section (or one of its committees)
do this year? How can we help you address the issues you facing
your practice? Please let me have your thoughts and suggestions
by calling me at 650-571-5100, or sending me e-mail at BFOUGHT@CONNECTIX.COM.
The Section offers tremendous opportunities for individuals willign
ot put in the time and effort to make something happen. With your
help, we can continue the excellent work of the Section, and I look
forward to hearing from you and to working with you this coming
year.

interests through projects, publications, and programs. Visit our
