IN THIS ISSUE JANUARY 2001

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
- Bonnie Fought

As the Napster case winds through the courts, Dot Coms and other technology stock prices swoon with the ups and downs of investor fancies, and genetically modified corn is recalled from taco shells nationwide, you might wonder what these all have in common. And the answer is they all represent topic areas that the Section of Science and Technology Law addresses through its publications, committees, and annual meeting programs.

For example, if you take a look at the most recent issue of Jurimetrics, you will see that it tackles a wide range of topics of interest to lawyers in a variety of areas of science and technology law including Internet Law (export restriction on encryption source code, personal jurisdiction in the age of the Internet, and potential trademark infringement in Internet banner advertising), scientific evidence (codification of the "Daubert Trilogy") and Intellectual Property (analysis of the RIAA v. Diamond Multimedia case and the impact of the Rio device).

Jurimetrics is an international, peer reviewed law journal that is published by the Section of Science and Technology Law and the Center for the Study of Law, Science, and Technology of the Arizona State University College of Law. It is published quarterly and is just one of the benefits provided to you as a member of the Section of Science and Technology Law. You also will see that the Section is already hard at work on topics of broad interest for the annual meeting in Chicago next August. From individual rights in scientific research to e-privacy to MP3, Napster and other intellectual property issues to scientific evidence to an exploration of the future of science, technology, and the law in the third millennium.

I encourage you to take advantage of these and other benefits that come from being a member of the Section of Science and Technology Law. And as your interest and time allows, become involved in the work of the Section.

With the true beginning of the next millennium in the year 2001, fantastic future visions will come of age. Being a member of the Section makes you not just a passenger but a participant in the piloting of the development of rational rules and limits to the limitless technological future. So please join us!

THE 26TH ANNUAL AAAS COLLOQUIUM ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY

The AAAS Colloquium on Science and Technology Policy, held in Washington each spring, provides a forum for discussion and debate about budget and other policy issues facing the S&T community. Since its beginning in 1976, it has grown into an annual institution that draws nearly 500 of the nation's top science and technology experts. The Colloquium has established itself as the major public meeting in the U.S. on science and technology policy issues. The 26th Annual AAAS Colloquium on Science and Technology Policy will take place May 3-4, 2001, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. The meeting will take place Thursday morning through Friday afternoon; this is a change from the traditional schedule of Wednesday afternoon through Friday noon; also, next year's Colloquium will be held a few weeks later than in past years. Mark your calendars now and make plans to attend; more program information and registration materials will be available in late 2000 at http://www.aaas.org/spp/dspp/rd/colloqu.htm.
