LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Our section is on the move -- more programs, more content and even a new look for one of our time-honored publications. Before I give too much away, I invite you to take a quiz of sorts about our section, delivered in a top ten list format.

With deference to David Letterman, and with an imaginary drum roll and Letterman-style pencil tossing, here it is.....

Top 10 Things You May Not Know About Our Section (but should!)

10. We published four amazing books this year! They are:

9. We have two great new books being published this month. Electronic Evidence and Discovery: What Every Lawyer Should Know by Michele C.S. Lange, Kristin M. Nimsger and The E-Business Legal Arsenal: Practitioner Agreements and Checklists, Ruth Hill Bro, Editor.

8. Our Section is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. While we aren't having a formal party; we acknowledge the hard work of the many people who lead this Section, including one of the founders, Lee Loevinger, who recently passed away.

7. We have two new committees, our open source committee and nanotechnology committee that are actively soliciting new members. For the open source committee, please contact sbyassee@maupintaylor.com. If you are interested in joining the nanotech committee, please contact Françoise Gilbert at fgilbert@itlawgroup.com. If you are uncertain which committees to join and want to know about other options, contact our Section Director, Shawn Taylor Kaminski (skaminski@staff.abanet.org) or me at (hrafter@digidesign.com)

6. There are additional publications in the works, and we'd love more contributors. They are the Biotech Handbook (contact: jafleming@jonesday.com) and Science For Lawyers, a primer for lawyers who want an introduction to a broad range of science topics (contact Eric Drogin, at eyd@drogin.net)

5. Our well-loved Section black-and-white newsletter BLAST has been replaced with a new publication, The SciTech Lawyer. Please look in your mailboxes and let me know what you think of our brand new four-color, content rich Section magazine.

4. We are actively soliciting volunteers to serve on our editorial board for The SciTech Lawyer. Please contact Ivan Fong at ivan.fong@ge.com if you are interested.

3. Many of our committees have active listservs, which you are welcome to join, free of charge. As an example, the Information Security Committee and the ePrivacy Committee, each have active listservs. If you'd like to sign up, please go on line to select the discussion group of your choice.

2 The Information Security Committee is sponsoring a Teleconference on July 20th. From 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m ET. More Details and registration will be available in June on line at the ABA's CLE Calendar

And the number one thing you probably don't know about our Section, but should....

1. We are offering seven wonderful CLE opportunities and a *free* party at the ABA Annual meeting in Atlanta on August 7 and 8. Please join us! One of our standout programs is entitled "Will You and Your Client Survive the Next Great Epidemic." This program features an all-star panel, including Dr. Julie Gerberding, the Director of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention. We also have excellent programs on international legal development affecting e-business, open source licensing, and many other timely topics. If cutting-edge CLE is not enough to entice you to Hotlanta, how about a cool-you-down Section Reception and Party, free to all Section members, at the lovely Peachtree Club? Additional details on our program offerings program offerings and party are available on line or you may call the Section Office at 312/988-5599.

Hope to see you in Atlanta!

Regards,

Heather D. Rafter
