Update on Uniform Environmental Covenants

Roger Schwenke (of Carlton Fields in Tampa, Florida) has been working for several years as the official American Bar Association Advisor (and RPPT's representative) to the Drafting Committee of NCCUSL (the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws) regarding the negotiation and creation of uniform environmental covenants. Those concepts and provisions are now found in the Uniform Environmental Covenants Act (UECA) As Roger reports, the UECA has now been adopted by ten (10) states and is currently being considered by several others. This is an issue which affects almost all real estate practitioners and their clients.

Anyone who wants to find out more or perhaps get involved in this area should contact Roger Schwenke at RSchwenke@CarltonFields.com. He will be happy to connect you with additional information and knowledgeable people involved in this process.

Techno-Tales:  Technology Tools for Dirt Lawyers

In an effort to provide new and helpful information to our members, E-Dirt is inaugurating a new column:  "Techno-Tales:  Technology Tools for Dirt Lawyers".  The editors of this column are Gerald Hoenig and Nancy Grekin.  The goal of the column is to provide you from time to time (not necessarily in every issue) with information on technology tools which you can use to make your practice more effective, efficient and profitable.  They will also answer your technology questions ("what program(s) should I use for this?  "Is there a tool I can get which will let me do that?"  "Is there an easier way for me to do this task?").

The first article in this new column is by Jerry and describes his search for a new cell phone (surely a tool almost everyone uses today).  Jerry talks about why he picked the model he ended up with, compares it with other alternative models and discusses several issues you should consider when looking for a new multi-purpose PDA/phone.

Note: the information in this and subsequent articles is not intended to be a recommendation to buy one model over another, nor is it intended to be a promotion of any specific product.  And the views expressed in this article are only those of the author and not the editors of E-Dirt, the Section or the ABA.

We hope you like this article and this new column and find this information helpful to your practice. We intend for this column to provide practical and useful technology information to the Real Estate practitioner.  Accordingly, if there are any technology issues, strategies or products you would like to see discussed in a future E-Dirt issue or if you have technology questions you would like answered, please let Jerry and Nancy know.
