Legal Education Program Bridges Serb-Kosovar Ethnic Divide

Serb law graduates in Mitrovica are not exposed to Kosovo criminal or civil procedure during their studies as are their counterparts in Pristina. To counter this divisive pattern, ABA ROLI developed a half-day program to introduce Serbs to the intricacies of the Kosovo legal system. The program was met with great interest. Read more »

Moroccan Judges Reach Consensus on Agenda for Deepening Reforms

Hassania RetreatAt a recent retreat facilitated by ABA ROLI for the board members of the Hassania, Morocco’s judges’ association, seventeen prominent judges from various regions of Morocco drafted an action plan to promote Morocco’s first charter of judicial conduct. The workshop also gave the judges an opportunity to discuss the challenges they face under the current period of democratic transition in Morocco.  Read more »

ABA ROLI Eases Ecuador's Transition from Inquisitorial to Adversarial Trials

An October 2007 training was the second in a three-part series on the new adversarial system for police, prosecutors, and judges. One prosecutor noted that the workshop “has had a direct impact on our daily practice and increased the chances that we will be successful in prosecuting cases.” Read more »

ABA President Urges Musharraf to Restore the Rule of Law in Pakistan

The recent crisis in Pakistan has led to the suspension of that nation’s Supreme Court and the arrests of thousands of lawyers and judges.  ABA President Bill Neukom has called on American lawyers to stand up for the rule of law and has urged Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to restore constitutional law, reinstate the Supreme Court justices, and to free those he has wrongly arrested. Georgia Street Law Program Moving Ahead Toward Long-Term Sustainability

The ABA ROLI Street Law clinic is now incorporated into Tbilisi State University Law Faculty's syllabus, and students who participate will receive ten academic credits upon completion. Through the program, twenty masters students from TSU Law Faculty will serve as street law trainers in ten high schools, advancing the rule of law by raising Georgian youth's confidence in their country's legal system.
