Oman Judges Tackle Labor Law Basics

Hassania RetreatThough a recent free trade agreement with the U.S. requires provisions for labor unions in Oman’s laws, union-formation and collective bargaining are new to the Sultanate. At an ABA ROLI workshop, 22 Omani judges discussed international labor standards and conventions, union formation, freedom of association, dispute settlement, human trafficking and equal employment rights. ABA ROLI Trains All of Armenia’s Trial Court Judges on Case Precedent

Under Armenia’s new Judicial Code, decisions of the Court of Cassation now create binding precedents. ABA ROLI led a workshop to demonstrate to Armenia’s judges—who are not familiar with such a system—how courts in different jurisdictions apply and use case law precedents. Read more »

Working Group Sets Judicial Benchmarks for MENA

Regional judicial experts in the Middle East and North Africa agree that ensuring access to justice and improving justice systems in the region requires effective tools that evaluate a country’s performance and adherence to international standards of judicial practice. Such international standards of monitoring and evaluation have not previously existed. But during a December ABA ROLI workshop, experts drafted benchmarks that represent some of the values of the region. Read more »

New Directors Inaugurate Programs in Three African Countries

Hassania RetreatA trio of new country directors—Mathieu Ndongo-Koni in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Yolande Fouda in Cameroon, and Kenneth Anderson (pictured at right) in Ethiopia—began the new year by inaugurating programs that promote the rule of law in Africa. They will respond to the unique needs of each country by focusing on key areas—including education reform and anti-trafficking. Read more »
