Podcasts: Criminal Justice Reform in Ecuador

August 2008

Ecuador reformed its criminal procedure code and is in the process of transitioning from an inquisitorial to an accusatorial system, which includes greater reliance on oral advocacy and gives police as opposed to prosecutors greater responsibility for investigating crimes. This new accusatorial system also places greater emphasis on collaboration between three judicial sector operators, namely judges, prosecutors and police.

Charles Caruso, Director of ABA ROLI’s Criminal Justice Project in Ecuador, discusses the reforms of Ecuador's criminal justice system and  the resulting practical and theoretical implications as well as the importance of creating a sustainable, cooperative foundation of justice for the future.
