Report Details Vital Impact of Rule of Law Assistance in East Timor
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative’s (ABA ROLI) Research and Program Development Office has released its assessment of Timor-Leste’s justice sector. The report, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Rights Consortium, finds that the foreign assistance provided by the United States to advance the rule of law has indeed had a vital impact in Timor-Leste, given the lack of institutions and the shortage of qualified legal and judicial personnel in the newly independent country. Innovative Program Helps Combat Human Trafficking by Fostering International Cooperation
A new ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) program will focus on increasing mutual legal assistance between Ukraine and its neighbors Poland, Russia, and Turkey—the top three destination countries for Ukrainian victims of human trafficking. The program, called “Strengthening Capacities in Mutual Legal Assistance to Counter Human Trafficking in Ukraine,” is funded by the Royal Danish Embassy in Ukraine and will be jointly implemented with the International Organization for Migration. Legal Education Program Bridges Serb-Kosovar Ethnic Divide
Over the past year, the ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) has been working with the Kosovo Chamber of Advocates (KCA) Commission on Women and Minorities to encourage and recruit minority lawyers, including lawyers from Kosovo’s Serbian population. As part of this effort, ABA ROLI hosted a recent seminar, funded by the US Agency for International Development, for students from the Serbian law faculty in the northern town of Mitrovica. More »»
Georgia Street Law Program Moving Ahead Toward Long-Term Sustainability
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) street law training conducted from October 11 to 13 marked the beginning of a full-scale Street Law Clinic at Tbilisi State University (TSU) Law Faculty. ABA ROLI Sponsors New Moot Court Facility in Kosovo
A ribbon cutting ceremony on October 9, 2007 marked the completion of construction of the newly inaugurated Moot Courtroom at the University of Pristina Law Faculty in Kosovo. The redesigned space holds a courtroom and offices where students will be working with actual clients on real cases. It is also equipped with a translation booth and electronic equipment to conduct legal proceedings. More »»
Kosovo Participates in Disciplinary Hearing in New Mexico via Videoconference
The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) gave attorneys and lay people in Kosovo a rare glimpse into a mock disciplinary hearing held by the New Mexico Disciplinary Board on October 17, 2007. The videoconference event was the first training for the newly appointed members of the Kosovo Chamber of Advocates’ (KCA) disciplinary committees to witness first-hand how a disciplinary system functions in general, and to hear advice from their counterparts in New Mexico. Kosovo’s Judiciary Takes a Tough Stance against Corruption
At an October 2007 conference organized by the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), Kosovo’s three main judicial organizations launched a landmark joint anti-corruption strategy. The Kosovo Chamber of Advocates (KCA), the Kosovo Judges Association (KJA) and the Kosovo Prosecutors Association (KPA) worked together on the Strategy for a Transparent and Non-Corrupt Judicial System through a six-month grant by Advocacy Training and Resource Center (ATRC). Moroccan Judges Reach Consensus on Agenda for Deepening Reforms
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) recently facilitated a strategic planning retreat for the board members of the Hassania, Morocco’s judges’ association. The retreat provided an unprecedented opportunity for the board members to draft an action plan to promote Morocco’s first charter of judicial conduct. The workshop also gave the judges an opportunity to discuss the challenges they face under the current period of democratic transition in Morocco. More »»
