Judicial Development and Training
The ABA Rule of Law Inititive (ABA ROLI) is collaborating with the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) to support training for new and sitting judges. ABA ROLI has partnered with the MOJ to implement workshops on anti-money laundering and contracting for judges and prosecutors, and training-of-trainers seminars for judicial instructors. In addition, ABA ROLI is assisting with the creation of judicial practice manuals to develop greater consistency in judicial decision-making. ABA ROLI is also providing comparative expertise to support the soon-to-be-established Omani Judicial Training Institute with strategic planning and curriculum development.
Legal Education
ABA ROLI is providing technical assistance to the Sultan Qaboos University College of Law with integration of practical skills training into the curriculum. ABA ROLI has conducted a series of roundtable discussions and skills-building seminars with the College of Law. The anticipated next steps for the College of Law include establishing mentor/internship programs for its students.
Public Legal Education
ABA ROLI is working with the Ministry of Legal Affairs (MLA) to strengthen legal skills among the ministry’s lawyers through professional training workshops on targeted training topics such as contract writing. ABA ROLI is also partnering with the MLA on the development of a public legal education campaign to increase awareness of legal rights.
The ABA ROLI programs in Oman have been funded by the U.S. Department of State Office of the Middle East Partnership Initiative and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
