China's Revised Law on Lawyers: A Move Toward Greater Professional Independence?

a brown bag discussion with Hyeon-Ju Rho, China Country Director for the ABA Rule of Law Initiative, and Adam H. Arkel, a member of the ABA Section of International Law China Committee who has written on the Chinese Law on Lawyers. The discussion will include:

  • Recent amendments to China's Law on Lawyers go into effect on June 1, 2008.
  • Among other changes, the amendments expand lawyers' rights to meet with clients in criminal cases, to access case files, and to investigate. 
  • What do these and other amendments mean for greater professional independence and what are the challenges to implementation?
