Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Council on Racial and Ethnic Justice website! The key objective of the Council is to assist with the elimination of racial and ethnic bias in our judicial system. The existence (or even the perception) of racial and ethnic bias undermines the credibility and effectiveness of our justice system. The Council therefore focuses on creating systemic changes, which strengthen the justice system. As a freestanding and separate entity in the American Bar Association, the Council focuses on fostering relationships with community groups, civil rights organizations, businesses, religious organizations and bar associations to achieve its goals. The key initiatives of the Council include:

LaVeeda Morgan Battle
Chair, ABA Council on Racial and Ethnic Justice

  • Diversity Roundtable Programs with colleges and universities;
  • Data collection project on color/racial profiling;
  • "Friends of the Council Program" – a mentoring program designed to expose a pool of diverse students to career paths in the justice system;
  • Campaign to Promote Racial Justice – a joint program with NLC, NBA and ABA;
  • The Tulia, Texas Project

The Council urges you to become involved with any or all of these projects. Our hope is that these initiatives will result in the legal system becoming more relevant to racial and ethnic minorities, and that the law will become more attractive to minorities as a worthy profession to pursue. To learn more about the Council’s initiatives and programs, I invite you to review the website or contact any of the Council leaders.
