Immigration Advocates Network Undergraduate Internships
Start Date: September 2009
End Date: December 2009
Last Day to Apply: September 10, 2009
The ABA Commission on Immigration is seeking undergraduates for exciting internship opportunities assisting the Immigration Advocates Network (IAN) with managing its online resource library, news service, and national trainings calendar. IAN is a unique new collaborative initiative developed by the Catholic Legal Immigration Network and Pro Bono Net, in addition to eight of the leading immigration legal support organizations and networks, that aims to enhance information and resources sharing, capacity, and communication among immigration legal services providers. IAN’s activities include maintaining a national calendar of immigration law trainings throughout the country, providing and linking to web-based resources for service providers, delivering timely immigration news and practice alerts, supporting immigration pro bono recruitment efforts, and helping service providers, particularly in remote and underserved areas, to share best practices. Internship activities include: helping to maintain current news, trainings, and a rapidly expanding substantive resource library, researching immigration news and trainings/events, and working with IAN staff on other ad hoc projects as needed. Candidates should have access to a computer, be web savvy, and have excellent organizational and writing skills. No HTML experience is necessary, but a background or interest in technology is a plus. The internships can be based anywhere, and interns will be supervised by IAN staff in New York by email and telephone. Hours are flexible and project based, but IAN would prefer a one-day-a-week commitment for 6 hours. The internship provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about immigration advocacy while sharpening their research and project management skills.
Interested applicants should e-mail a cover letter, resume, brief writing sample, and a list of two references to Anne Schaufele at Schaufea@staff.abanet.org. The fall internship (flexible dates) is unpaid and applications will be accepted through September 10, 2009.
Division for Public Services
2009 - 2010 Clerkships
The Division offers two Clerkship opportunities:
The first is a ten-week Spring/Summer Clerkship open by competition, reviewed on a rolling basis and offering students entering into their second or third year at an ABA-accredited law school the opportunity to design and complete a legal research and writing project in substantive areas of Division concern. If of acceptable quality, the Division may publish the resultant monograph. Applicants must be members of the ABA Law Student Division and may join at http://www.abanet.org/lsd/home.html.
The second is a Fall/Winter Clerkship and typically involves conducting project research and writing; developing information for directories and other databases; coordinating survey development, distribution and results; or editing manuscripts for publication. Applicants may be undergraduate or law school students depending on project need.
- NEW!! 2009-2010 Clerkship Flyer
- Shanda Moyers, a 3L at Stetson University School of Law, was the winner of the 2007-2008 PSD Clerkship. Shanda's research focused on the small segment of the long-term homeless population with the most pronounced barriers to self-sufficiency, primarily mental health and/or substance abuse issues. Her research evaluated the effectiveness of legislation and the use of the criminal justice system in combating street homelessness in comparison with the effectiveness of measures employing outreach and the Housing First model.
