ADOPTED BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES

WHEREAS, The enactment of the Twenty-Sixth Amendment conferred the right to vote on several million college students between the ages of 18 and 21; and
WHEREAS, It is now the express policy of a substantial majority of the states to permit students to register to vote in the area where they attend school; and
WHEREAS, Federal and state courts have forbidden discrimination against students and directed that they be required to meet only the usual durational residence requirements; and
WHEREAS, The American Bar Association believes that encouragement of resort to the ballot box as a prime instrument of social justice is in the public interest;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association approves the principle of non-discrimination established by recent court decisions, and declares its commitment to the promotion and support of voter registration drives and reform of voter registration procedures, to the end that the letter and the spirit of the Twenty-Sixth Amendment be observed.
