Question 5:  Which do you value more, individual liberty or public safety? Why?

Reactions & Thoughts

Darrell, 18
Shaw H.S.
East Cleveland, OH:
I value individual liberty more than I value public safety. The reason why I feel that individual liberty is more important is because noone has the right to take your rights away from you.The Bill of Rights guarantees you rights that they can't be taken from you,but it is you responsibility to know your rights.

Clark, 18
Newport H.S.
Newport, OR:
Individual liberty is more important. Individuals should be able to make their own decisions. They should also be responsible for their actions. No one has a right to threaten other or intrude other's individual rights. There needs to be a balance between the needs of the individual and the safety of others. Individuals should be able to do what they want to as long as they don't harm or excessively bother others.

Amanda & Brad, 18
St. Pius X H.S.
Atlanta, GA:
Public safety, in most cases, should be valued more than individual liberty. Public safety is one of the reasons that this nation was founded. The Puritans fled here to escape persecution and have individual rights. They could never have attained those rights unless the country they lived in provided the safety to exercise their liberty. The same ideology should hold true for today's society as well. The idea of public safety should never be taken to extremes and it won't because the ensurance of public saftey protects individual liberties. Public safety is needed for the protection of rights but never should that safety infringe upon rights.

Fredrick, 16
Keyser H.S.
Keyser, WV:
Call me mad but it just dosn't seem like a fun world if eveything is perfectly safe. I, personaly do NOT wish to die of old age.

That's not really what you have to consider though, is it. It's like safety belts. Who's to say I'm safer with one on. I've know, in fact have members of my family, people who would have been killed in car accidents had they been wearing the safty belts. So isn't it my personal liberty to not have to worry about dieing because of a safty belt or an air bag? Then you have to think about the percentages. Safty belts save more lives than they kill. I feel that individual liberty should be put ahead of safety. Why live a long life in a dull world when you can live a potencially shorter one in a more interesting world.

Jay, 18
St. Pius X H.S.
Atlanta, GA:
Individual Liberty because it is what this country is founded on. Lives are not worth living without freedom.

Ramzi A., 18
Fairfax H.S.
Fairfax, VA:
The reason why I chose individual liberty is because I believe in survival of the fitest. This world has been surviving on this principle for a long time, and it makes for a stronger next generation. I think that public safety is there to protect the weak.

Stacy, 17
Byron Center H.S.
Byron Center, MI:
I value individual liberty more than public safety. The reason for this is because I think it is more essential to protect individuals rights. If individuals are satisfied with their freedoms, then they most likely won't be a threat to the safety in public places. Also, no one has been able to come up with an exact set of guidlines or rules that determine when a person is harming the public safety by things like and loitering, and when it is okay for officials to take action in the appropriate manner. Since these guidlines are non-existing, peoples individual liberty is being denied in cases like Chicago v. Morales, and that is wrong.

Laura, 17
Shiloh H.S.
Lithonia, GA:
I value public safety more than individual liberty because I would rather be safe everywhere I go rather than everyone for themselves. I would want to be protected from peoplewho could cause me harm and I would hope people would be protected from any wrong doing that I might cause. People should be expected to give up some rights when they leave their homes because not everyone will abide by the rules. Those are the people who make people give up there individual liberties.

Dayanis B., 17
St. Agnes Academic H.S.
College Point, NY:
I value the most individual liberty because in if you are not free how are you going to be able to go outside. freedom is the best thing a person can have because it allows you to do what ever you wan't to do. we are always going to be exposed to danger in public places because there are some serious sick people out there that they don't care what they do to other people.

Jodi, 16
Nitro H.S.
Nitro, WV:
I value both individual liberty and public saftey; however, I place more value on individual liberty. The Bill of Rights has given us all of our rights. Just because some people are becoming too deviant for society to handle, doesn't mean our authority should have to right to take away our rights. They should be the ones sacrificing something, not us sacrificing our rights.

Jennifer, 17
Shiloh H.S.
Lithonia, GA:
Public Safety...Without some control over society, there can be no individual rights. Therefore you have to give up a little freedom for the better good of everyone. I mean, who wants to live in a place where it's not safe to get out and walk around-if it means the police have the right to ask me to leave from somewhere-then so be it. They most likely would only ask if something was obviously wrong.

Lynette, 17
St. Agnes Academic H.S.
College Point, NY:
As a resident of NYC, I would have to say that I value public safety over individual liberty. Living in the hard streets of New York makes one afraid of the streets and it only remotely makes you want to do something about it. The area that I live in is dangerous. There are many drug-dealing and violence. I wish someone would do something about it. I know many people who aren't drugdealers or violent. These people are just like me and my family. So God forbid if something were to happen to them. These is why public safety is much more valuable.
