Question 1:  Has anyone (shopkeepers, police, teachers, etc.) ever told you and your friends to leave when you were hanging out somewhere? What was your reaction?

Reactions & Thoughts

Enza, 17

College Point, NY:
Yes, I was sitting on a bench in a shopping center my friends and I just finished shopping and we were taking a break. The security guard told us to leave the bench cause we were lotiering which we weren't. I was very upset because we weren't doing anything bad we were just taking a break after shopping.

We were at our neighborhood pool by the lake in the pavilion. Everyone there was a member of the pool and a lady told us that we had no business beign there and we had to leave. None of us left because as members we have access to all the area around the pool, including the lake. I thought that she had no right to tell us to leave.

No, no one has ever asked me to leave a place were I was hanging out at. Because I am not a person that loiters. Loittering causes caos.

Greg, 16

I was once told to leave the pool area of a codominium I was staying at. I was with a small group, of about 5 friends and it was at 11:00 at night and we were sitting at the pool talking. We were really quiet and we weren't causing any disturbance. But because we were teens and we were a mix group of boys and girls, the guard told us to leave or he would call our unit. He yelled at us and was very forceful, and he wouldn't let us answer. He threatened us also. I found it to be very unsubstantiated and presumtuous of him to yell and threaten us, especially when we weren't doing anything offensive. We calmly tried to reason with him and just leave without saying anything, but he kept us there and tried to get a rise out of us. He also shoved one of the guy friends that was with us. He left after we had gone out of sight. And he also thought we lied about how we got into the pool, when it was the honest truth, But he just wouldn't hear it. I thought it was blown out of proportion and handeled inproperly

Yes, many of times my friends and I have been told that we could not be in a certain area, but we were not hurting anyone and were not doing any- thing illegal. One time we were at an empty parking lot about 9:30 at night, just hanging out, when a police officer approached us and told us we had to leave. I asked the officer why we had to leave,we were not doing anything wrong or illegal. He told us that we were disturbing others. And the more people that showed up would cause commotion, which would cause a fight or something bad to happen. If they asigned a parking lot that teens could hang out at. It would be a lot better. It could be just on parking lot that is abandoned. Just somewhere were could teens could hang out.

No, no one has ever asked me to leave before. But at the same time, I sure if I were asked to leave, I would most likely obey simply because they probably had reason to ask my leaving. I mean, in most cases, don't most people always just follow directions when given by a police officer or someone in authority?

We believe that anyone who is in school and is asked to move has to follow the rules of the school because of the Supreme Court Case Tinker v. Des Moines,in which students lose all rights or must leave all rights outside before entering a school building. We as a group have all experienced the situation that is being discussed and feel that if you are hanging out where it is a place of business you have every reason to be told to leave only if causing havoc towards the place of business. At the time of our situation we of course did not agree with the circumstances but we left because we did not want to cause additional problems in that place of business.

Once last year some students from the junior class were holding a party in Salisbury.A large number of Moberly students were in attendance , me included. Salisbury was represented thoroughly as well. Now, Salisbury people didn't appreciate Moberly people throwing a party in their town so the atmosphere was rather hostile. The Salisbury police were already checking people as they came through the front door. Most of the party attendance was using the side door. A small disagreement broke out which escaladed to a brawl. The police officers turned on the lights It was like someone yelled fire. The officers told everyone to leave.

This to me wasn't fair. The fight wasn't the ones' throwing the party fault and it shouldn't have been broke up. Even if it was their fault the cops shouldn't be able to run everyone off the people who owned the building should have

Yes, I was told by the owner of Golden Buddha Chinese restaurant to leave his property immediately, or else he would chop me up and put me in the food.

One Friday night, about a month ago, I was out with some friends. We were driving past Save More when we noticed that Ashley's brother was standing in the parking lot. We decided to go see what he was doing there. It turns out that something was wrong with his car. Well, we pulled up and parked near him to talk to him. Pretty soon the manager of the store comes out with a police officer. They tell us that we have to leave, and if we come back then we will be arrested. When we tried to explain, neither one of them would listen. The only thing that made me mad was that they wouldn't even listen to why we were there. They didn't care. I think that if we were older they may have asked before they assumed, or they probably would not even come out at all.

One time I was at a party having fun. Some people started talking about each other so they went outside. They started pushing and fighting. After a while some other people jumped in the fight, then some more, and then some more. Soon it was not a fight it was a massive brawl. The cops were called and they arrived. To try to help break up the fight they were ordering everyone to get in their cars and leave. There were at least ten cops so no one wanted to get in trouble so they left. I don't think they had the right to tell us to leave because we were on private property.

One time me and my fellow students where just hanging out in a local food store parking lot, and they told us to leave. We wasn't doing anything wrong we where just meeting up with some other friends to go to a party. The store manager came out and if we don't leave he was going to call the police.

So anyways, to not to cause any trouble we desided to leave!

Yes I was told to leave when I was sitting on a bench outside Genovese. I was disturbed by the fact that I was asked to leave from a public place, in which everyone is allowed to go to.

One time we were all up at a parking lot. Some of the guys there had loud music. I think that loud music comes with a bad reputation. People think with loud rap music comes bad attitudes. Well anyways, we were all sitting up at this parking lot. There was about 15 or 20 people up there. We were all just sitting up there listening to music, and here comes the night manager to the store. She asked us to leave or she would call the cops. Well, she didn't have to call because here came the cops. We all left, and didn't have anywhere else to go.

I think that if our town was to put in a YMCA, that we wouldn't hang out in places were people didn't want us. Plus not all rap music comes with bad attitudes.

This summer some of my friends and I were told to leave a parking lot of a local business. We were told that the business didn't need our business and they wanted us to leave. After an arguement with the officer, we left but we were very unhappy about being told to leave when we had done nothing wrong. The next night we did it again. The cops were called and they said we would have to leave because we were on private property. We had all went in and bought a soda so we were all paying customers. We later found out that we were told to leave because we were juveniles and the owner thought we looked bad for his store. I haven't been back to his store since. I told everyone I know and we all boycott his store.
