WORKSHOP: THE SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court: Key First Amendment Cases in 1999-2000

Wednesday, April 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Charles Williams, American Bar Association, Editor, Preview of U.S. Supreme Court Cases

This session will offer an update on the Supreme Court's First Amendment jurisprudence, in such areas as freedom of speech, the establishment [of religion] clause, and the right to association. Such cases as University of Wisconsin v. Southworth (student fees and free speech), U.S. v. Playboy (cable scrambling of sexually explicit programs), Nixon v. Shrink Missouri PAC (campaign finance reform), Dale v. Boy Scouts of America (gay scouts), and Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (student-led prayer at football games) will be discussed. Attention will be given to case outcomes, key litigants, legal arguments, and implications for students and young people.
