WORKSHOP: SUMMER INSTITUTES

Summer Institutes: What? How? Why?

Tuesday, April 4, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Lee Arbetman, Street Law
Jan Miller, State Bar of Texas, Law-Related Education Program
Carolyn Pereira, Constitutional Rights Foundation/Chicago

This session will explore a variety of issues related to planning, executing, and evaluating summer institutes for teachers. Some attention will be given to the subject matters for institutes, but the primary focus will be on practical issues ("best practices"). Topics to be addressed include how to recruit teachers on a national, regional and/or statewide basis, strategies for balancing substantive content with curriculum/classroom activities for the teachers, follow-up opportunities with the teachers, and the role of new technologies in conducting institutes and in classroom teaching. The three presenters will draw upon their substantial experience in organizing and conducting institutes and workshops.
