WORKSHOP: PROMOTING CITIZENSHIP THROUGH SERVICE-LEARNING

Promoting Citizenship through Service-Learning

Tuesday, April 4, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Todd Clark, Executive Director, Constitutional Rights Foundation
Kathleen Kirby, Senior Consultant, Constitutional Rights Foundation

Teaching citizenship is a goal of all public schools, and yet very little attention is given to teaching citizenship or providing students with opportunities to apply citizenship skills. The knowledge of social issues and the ability to take an informed position on social issues are essential to our democracy. Service-learning provides an opportunity for civic action at the local level and an opportunity to put civic skills into practice.

This session will model the ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP TODAY framework and guide the participants through a process of examining public policy, exploring options and taking action through service-learning projects. The session will be interactive and participants will receive the ACT service-learning framework and curriculum materials.

OBJECTIVES

  • Participants will identify the necessary skills for citizenship and civic action, including personal and group responsibility
  • Participants will recognize citizenship and civic action through service-learning as an essential part of our democracy
  • Participants will apply a civic action service-learning model which can be planned and implemented in the participant's community
